Need help with dated kitchen cabinets and vinyl floor.

We don't have a lot of money to spend on the floor and cabinets. I think the heavy grain looks dated. Not sure if I want to stain, paint, or just live with them. The vinyl floor is so old and it won't stay clean. I was trying to decide between wood or tile in the kitchen. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You are so right @decoenthusiaste the view is beautiful and one reason why I chose the apartment. the room is longer than it is wide, and I wanted the kitchen/bar to be included in the seating so the attached pic is how I was planning to lay it out. @cdrdesign I can't/change the table, its a gorgeous mahogany piece I had custom made and one I see keeping for some years yet! I dont plan a TV in this room, will put it in another room. This room in for living and entertaining guests. Sorry I dont have layout software, so you will have to make do with my scribbles using powerpoint! Comments (16)Thanks, lefty47. This is an older home, and just as One Plan guessed it is a soil stack from the upstairs bathroom. You are probably right that the cost of a custom solution may outweigh the benefits. Another idea I had, along the lines of the worktop bin suggested by One Plan, is a recessed spatula and long-handled utensil holder. I found out that Lee Valley sells motorized tv lift kits like the one used in the video above. It would be a matter of getting the contractor to build the box to go on the lift. I'm still a bit hung up on the idea, though it probably falls into your cost-outweighs-benefit category! Comments (6)Cement tile is very popular in my area now. My client is considering it for a bathroom. I am unlikely to recommend epoxy or any other coating. It would change the look and feel too much. I prefer to apply penetrant. I call it that, rather than "sealer," because it does not prevent leaks, or even absorption in porous tile, or grout. It protects calcium based cement and grout from reacting with acid, but it is not perfect and it needs to be reapplied periodically. Wine, salad dressing, lemon, and any tart food would react with cement I am hesitant to recommend cement tile for a bathroom. I am afraid of it as a kitchen floor. Sure it is a knock-out gorgeous material, but will caring for it make some clients wish they hadn't fallen in love? I would like to hear from home owners who have lived with it for a few years. Comments (7)@Kayla: I love IKEA hacking too! ;) Hiding the game consoles is definitely a possibility; I can't put the speakers in a cabinet though.. It's a deal breaker for the hubs. Invest in a high quality sound system, the speakers have to be out for acoustic reasons. If only I had known that before I agreed so easily.. ;-/ @groveraxle: I love that example! You're probably right about the shelves.. there's already too much going on on that wall! I'll look into wall art instead. ;) And yes! Now I realize that part of what was annoying me was that crazy up down profile. I'll have to try and streamline it as much as possible. Maybe put one of the small rear speakers on the left with a trailing plant on top to hide it; a small end cabinet around the same height on the right for the other speaker and to make room to clear off the top of the console? @Mystic Home: That's lovely!! Using electronics as a plant stand, vase to soften the look of that speaker, putting the speaker in an end cabinet.. genius! That might be the best (and cheapest) way to make everything "disappear". 9 years agoThere is also Luxury Vinyl Tile at Lowes that you can grout for a more realistic look. This example come in 16x16" squares. My daughter just put a similar one in their kitchen, and really updated it. They had flooring very similar to yours too!

9 years agolast modified: 9 years agoYou are right the oak grain is dated. But, depending on your budget, and the floor looks ugly to you, I'd spend the cash on new floor, backsplash and hardware. Here is a kitchen update with oak cabinet. But, I'd suggest a brushed nickel hardware in a transitional style. For the floor, 18" or 12 x 24" tile in a nice pattern instead of wood would be my choice. The good news is your cabinets are not this Yellow..

9 years agoA large scale porcelain tile laid offset like this would look nice with your cabinets. If you decide to paint the cabinets, get them professionally sprayed or learn how to do it right. DIY painted cabinets can often chip and need repainting after a couple of years and who wants to do that?!

New hardware and porcelain tile floor. (What is the nearby flooring??). Photo with white cabinets and large square porcelain tile. Or, you could do 12 x 24" offset floor tile...

You may be on point for what they want - White cabinets are certainly classic . . my favorite kitchens with traditional lines that are painted are now either brave (like a pale kitchen green or butter yellow) or neutral but not WHITE. Love the custom look of painted traditional cabinets in drabware or off white tones with some antiquing done - Toby Fairley has a beautiful one in sw wool skein that i keep coming back to . . love that slight contrast to the white fixtures - here the farmhouse sink and they added little feet . . . 8 years agoI installed 12x12 luxury vinyl and love it. Armstrong Brand and in the winter the floor is warm on the feet! Not a great pic. I also had no grout installation I didn't want the hassle if regrouping latter! Plus everyone runs in the house wet from the pool to use bathroom, no slip!
