Your second photo brings me right to the stairwell scene in Hitchcock's "Vertigo," although I realize I'm looking up, not down. It's really rather wonderful. I'm just wondering, looking to the upper left in particular, if it's been recently checked out by a structural engineer. As for paint, I'll be interested to see what others say. For me, who doesn't do a lot of white, I think I actually would stay with a white here. A muddy green might be nice as well, but you'd need to incorporate a bit of lighting -- perhaps uplighting along the beams unseen from below, with something amazing hanging from that cool, crazy peak you have. Especially in 50's and 60's houses, they often went through and put one kind of fixture, in the center of every room and the halls, and they were two bulb rectangular flat glass, frosted, sort of fluted edges and a simple (wheat pattern is what I grew up with) and they caught every bug around. I understand wanting variety, sometimes it may be the way to give a unified look to the house. Those look a lot more than the typical inexpensive utilitarian lights though.

Thanks Sugarbakers, I wanted to know if anyone has experience doing such a job or can recommend someone who has done it for them. Also wanted to find if there was more than one way to achieve the same look - e.g. vinyl tiles, laminates, tiles etc - and their application in both outdoor and indoor areas and the cost per sq ft for the different options. I'm considering installing this on approx 2000+ sq ft ceiling area including outdoor areas. Thanks again for your earlier reply.
