Kitchen accent wall help!!!

Hi. We are currently renovating our kitchen and I'm already thinking of paint colours as its due to be plastered in the next month. We will be having base units across the sides and back ( integrated f&f on the right side) and a run of wall units straight across the back wall, then the hob and oven in the island.
The units are white gloss with a white Quartz work top. The flooring will be a darkish oak.
I planning on the ceilings and walls being white but I would like a fairly dark grey on the back wall. I know much of it would be covered by units but I really think it would be nice to accentuate that wall against the vaulted ceiling. What does everyone think?? I've attached a photo to show the shape of the ceiling in my kitchen and a photo of the colours and kind of look I want to achieve......

I must admit my favourite colour with grey, white and copper is blush pink:) I think a shade of green would work, maybe pistachio or just go for a lighter shade of grey to continue it in the room and then add colour with cushions. It probably sounds a bit yuk but I saw a green and white jungle'ish style print sofa a while ago which could work. Just need to remember where I saw it and if it is quite how I remember! Are you having any form of table in there? Just thinking maybe a banquette might be quite nice in the corner with the bricked up windows

Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Thanks for your comments, its great to discuss with houzers! You are so right @decoenthusiaste the view is beautiful and one reason why I chose the apartment. the room is longer than it is wide, and I wanted the kitchen/bar to be included in the seating so the attached pic is how I was planning to lay it out. @cdrdesign I can't/change the table, its a gorgeous mahogany piece I had custom made and one I see keeping for some years yet! I dont plan a TV in this room, will put it in another room. This room in for living and entertaining guests. Sorry I dont have layout software, so you will have to make do with my scribbles using powerpoint! Could really do with help on choosing the light fitting in place of the central fan- what would look nice here or should I wait till the furniture gets here to choose the light to match?

Hi Fred, Thanks for the want of the precise measurements. The U shape area in my kitchen is 64" - 104 - 99" (left - centre - right). Height of the kitchen area is 107". The wall with the fridge has total length of 99" Fridge is 32" wide, 29" deep, 73" high (I bought this fridge on a good bargain but realized it was slightly oversized in this kitchen area, but got to live with it now) The wall beside the fridge is 23" deep I know some gap has to be left between this wall, the fridge and the wall mounted/countertop cabinets for ventilation I guess. So I'd say the cabinets on this wall will have a length of only 63"/64"? The microwave is 18.5 wide, 13" deep, 10.5" high The oven is 24" wide, 24" deep, 24" high. The wall next to the fridge which will have this feature cabinet 42" wide, 110" high which is next to the main door. I'm thinking the feature wall is kind of plain, but it covers up where the fridge is sticking out.

Hi Janet, ok I originally sketched on my tab (red) as 1 BR then modified on my phone (blue) for 2Br. hope you’ll get the idea. Master’s with walk-in closet, connected bath with added door (for sharing). kept store at end, open kitchen, Living rm ok to fit a sofa with tv/media cabinet. For dining, I’m seeing to combine your work and dining table. get another similar table to combine with your 1.7 table. (or if budget allows get a long table 1 piece.) dining side you put benches and work side get a high chair. this setting becomes the main feature of your house( my idea only not a rule) the bookshelves be on 1 side and can be longer as needed. hope this brings you more ideas for your new home. cheers! arielc

Yes, you can add coloured accessories if you want to. Why not? Grey, white and wood are a great neutral base. You can keep it neutral too. Very versatile base :-)

Crown Cloudburst. It's a lovely pale grey which can look completely different depending on the room

If you're after a similar colour to what you've pictured then look at farrow and ball railings which I suspect this is. Depending on the light in the room though it can look almost black or read quite blue. Alternatively purbeck stone is a nice warm mid grey but won't have a dramatic effect. I'd keep it neutral but use different textures for accessories, architectural style lights maybe, herbs, faux stems etc. It looks a lovely big room, is it all kitchen?

Hi Minnie. Yes it's all kitchen! I actually found out they used f&b off black but I keep getting scared and think it's so dark! But I guess I need it that dark seeing the cabinets are white, right? It was either that or keep it all white then add colour with a splash-back instead but that's more permanent than paint :)

That will be quite some kitchen, I bet you can't wait! It is dark but if that's the look you want then go for it, it's only paint although it may not be a DIY job with the ceiling height if you don't like it! Little Greene scree is also a nice colour as pictured or you could go lighter still. Have you actually chosen the floor? Are you having upstands?

Hi Minnie. Yes it's very exciting! We're doing all the work ourselves so it's been a slow process and I'm tired of doing dishes in the bath but we're getting there :)
The flooring I've picked is karndean mid brushed oak, it's quite similar to the flooring in the photo.
As for up-stands, that's one decision I haven't made yet but I'm assuming they're required?
Do you think the grey you posted would be better seeing it's slightly lighter?

Farrow and ball stifley blue
Only white under coat and I did the blue to make it look done last year the new plaster needs time to dry out !
It's Being all done October a few cracks on edges where blue is now need filling edges of wood work need filling here and there too ,so glad we waited I was going to do myself but decided to pay a professional !! And Get it over and done with

Yes, it is easier sometimes to pay somebody and get it done quicker!! However we've saved so much money doing it ourselves and plus my husband is an absolute perfectionist :) your kitchen is stunning!! you have great taste.

We're the same! We intend to stay in this house and while it's nice to know we've probably increased the value, we have done it for 'us'. You're right, I'm sure it will make entertaining easier. We shall soon see....roll on Christmas :/

Wow, that's amazing although don't envy you washing up! Why don't you wait until the cabinets are in and then use the dulux visualiser app or similar to see which shade to go for. The only reason I'm slightly hesitant is that the dark colour will accentuate the ceiling height but may also accentuate the height of the units making them looking disproportionately small (although may look great not knowing height of wall etc and where your lighting will go). I've tried finding a pic but failed. I'd then get a few testers, 2/3 coats on a3 and test in different lights. I think either upstand or splashback/tiles works better rather than have both. The floor looks nice, is that extending into the living?

Hi Minnie. Good idea about the app. The top of the wall units run from corner to corner, just where the ceiling starts to slope. As for the lighting we're having some recessed spot lights and then I'd like a main statement modern-ish chandelier hanging in the middle of the vaulted bit, I wanted pendant lights over the island but the island will be further forward and the centre of the island has an rsj straight above. The flooring will be the same through out the ground floor :)

I would certainly recommend a dark grey wall and for accessories you can add a touch of copper in pendant lights or a bowl or a vase. It would really add glamour to your room

you are looking for a statement dark wall, Farrow and Ball could be a
great option for you. They have very good quality dark greys (down pipe
is a good dark grey, but if you were after a softer look moleskin is a
good option).Another option that could work is having a statement
wall. In one of our displays we have a Panel Piedra wall behind the
cabinets:

These panels are made of high density polyurethane, polyester
resin, and real marble stone powder. So the end effect is a light and durable accent wall.

Hi guys. Just had a thought... We're having double pocket doors in between the kitchen and lounge/diner..as the doors will be open 95% of the time it's effectively open plan.
I'm worried that I won't have 'flow' between the rooms, With the kitchen having that dark wall and my lounge/diner being light with lots of greeny-blue and silver! Am I concerned over nothing? I've previously posted for help on my lounge, but here's a pic for those who haven't seen it...

personally I'd go for the dark grey, something similar to what Carolins posted or the scree. I think a copper pendant will look great against the grey and work well with the coral. I would still stick to textures and just add a little colour with herbs and the faux stems. You could also add some copper accessories. The kitchen is going to be nice opening off the living room continuing the White, the chrome handles and the flooring. I didn't see your response previously but the unit height sounds great against the wall

Thank You Minnie. I've had a look at scree and it's a nice colour and should carry my living room sofa colour through. We're also planning on putting a sofa in the kitchen.what colour do you think I could go with?

I agree with the slate grey I would also have a clear glass splash back so you protect the paint from grease and you don't lose the colour with tiles, however if you were to put tiles you can get amazing hexagonal tiles and use dark slate grey grout

It certainly sounds interesting Minnie :) we did play with the idea but our dining table is in the adjacent room so we decided on a nice big island with bar stools and a sofa! Going off course a bit..could I introduce some copper in my living room or do you not think it's needed?

It was nice I promise! That's probably a better idea, I was just thinking for breakfast or casual dining but you'll have the island for that. Perhaps wait until the chair and footstool turn up but you probably don't need it. I did try looking for a lampshade for you but it was surprisingly difficult!

Everything you suggest sounds nice Minnie, your home must be lovely! Tbh the area where the sofa is going is not very deep so we may well end up with banquette style seating as I do think they look lovely. Then maybe I could get a small round table for coffee's etc....aahh the lampshade! It's been a pain in the butt! I'm still waiting for the Laura Ashley sample's, you would not believe how many shades of duck egg there are! They're so expensive too! :)

I do think you can do black for the lampshade too. Touch of black is always nice. But this is the kitchen thread, so I'm out of line ;-)
I agree with the others, think that grey will work. If you can see it in the background when you look at your sofa, make sure it's a grey that works with that. Even though it's in another room.

Hi. This is the black shade. Bear in mind tho that the coffee table is being replaced with an ottoman the same colour as the wallpaper. What do you lot think? :)))

I like! But I didn't realise you're changing the coffee table. Hmm... But I do prefer this one to the White one. Is it an optical illusion or is this one larger? It looks good on the base.
I autocorrect keeps changing the w of White into a capital... Sigh ;-)

Hi carolins. I must admit I like it! It 'beefs' up the room if that makes sense..hmm..I don't think that does make sense actually :/ ....it's almost a shame to get rid of the table but I've ordered a new chair and ottoman and I love them! Maybe I could place something black on the ottoman to tie it in? The ottoman is the same fabric as this chair.....
