What can I do with this kitchen

We remodeled a couple of years ago and were under the gun to have it done before move in. We rushed the design and I am not loving how it looks. I know I can't do anything too major, but was thinking maybe the biggest issue is the back splash on the island needing to be contrast not the same material, the bar height too high, and the side bar too wide. I'd like to have it cut in half. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

All the issues that bother you, don't seem to be issues to me. I think you did a great job. What I see is there isn't enough contrast in your finishes and you have a mis-mash of styles going on. I would go more rustic and suggest the following:

1. Gray paint on the wall.
2. Stacked stone on Island or at the very least get rid of the doors and paint charcoal gray.
3. Keep the two bar stools on the wide side. Get rid of the ultra modern ones.
4. Darker pendants, dining fixture and cabinet hardware.

Getting rid of the too much brown won't fix the poor layout. Keep saving to redo it completely with a KD involved this time.

You could use the column for something useful like hanging utensils or cooking tools if you have the height or a towel rack or if you want to just hide it you could put fairy lights on/around it to give a homely feel.my personal opinion would be if there is a ledge you should get some vintage alcohol bottles and put them there as decoration and it works nice in most households.if no ledge just get a wine rack and screw it to the column

Artificial turf! The green (they come in different colours, too, if you'd like to be psychedelic) adds a lively pop of colour to a blah space, and they're designed in easy-to-install tile-style units that have some built-in drainage for minimal maintenance. Absolut Outdoors and Green Turf can tell you more :) And I'd hang an outdoor art piece or a screen for air plants on that blank wall, too, to enliven your balcony.

No stacked stone that is just plain ugly unless you can afford a new island counter top the 2 level will have to stay unless you can just remove that whole set of cabinets but that might open a can of worms with the flooring.The stools should at least all match if you have small kids the adjustable stools are great IMO maybe new pendants and handles

Are you trying to fix cosmetic problems or fix things that are irritating (not enough walk space near wide bar?)? What is the current budget range for changes?

The backsplash on the island looks to be about 6 inches high. Is that the one you want to change to a contrasting surface?

Maybe you could paint the island cabinets the same color as the front of the island to help bring it together. Also having all the stools match might help.

I actually like the size of the island! My suggestion would be to paint the cabinetry on the island. It would look awesome with a color a shade or two darker than the wall color, and would still be light enough to contrast with the countertop. If you don't want to paint over the front wooden cabinets, just the back white cabinets and surrounding trim should be the same color. The white cabinet doors really stand out currently. In the pictures I have attached from Houzz, the cabinet doors match the surrounding cabinetry for a more uniform look. Also, the bar stools would look better on one side. I would keep all the bar stools uniform. Very simple and relatively inexpensive changes that would make a huge difference! Good luck!

Thank you all for suggestions. I love the idea of painting the back of the counter doors gray. apple_pie_order, the backsplash is about 6 " high and then with 1 1/2" counter top you can't really stand at it comfortably. I'd like that bar dropped down so it was more standing height and add some contrasting backsplash. The stools just kind of ended mismatched because the brown topped we had from our previous house were too short.

I think painting island and replacing pendants would be best changes and most cost effective. Don't put any effort or money into changing island. It will lead to "project creep" which will lead to more money, more changes.

Removing that bar is easier said than done. Paint first all the outer sides and cabinet doors same darker gray. Then see what you think. Always do easiest and least expensive first.

I think a slightly darker shade of paint on the cabinetry would help a tremendous amount.

apple_pie_order it would be 37 1/2" (the height of the lower counter). We have power on the backsplash so I doubt my husband will remove the bar entirely. I appreciate that this probably not a kitchen to be whining about but we had the same cupboards and countertops at are old house and it was sharp. I will try painting. I like that idea.

If you do remove that portion of the countertop, there is a telescoping outlet that could be installed to keep the outlet but have it out of the way. Might want to research that. I don't have a reference handy, but maybe if Bruce is out there, he knows what I am talking about and has done this.
