Living Room Help
Please help :) Just moved into a house with built in cabinets surrounding the fireplace. The current design isn't really my style and we were hoping to re-paint the room and the built in cabinets. Any design ideas would be greatly appreciated re: color scheme and built ins.
This living room flows (via a step down ) from the kitchen (pictured above.
Details: The flooring is a medium brown and the couches we ordered are a chocolate brown (leather.) We are planning on placing a large area rug in the middle of the room.
Design: I was thinking gray walls in the living room and white built ins. Wasn't sure about doing the back of the built ins gray to match the wall color or an accent color/different shade of gray

7 years agoActually I like gray with brown. Start with painting the built-ins. Paint them a satin finish (rather that high gloss) white that is very similar to the kitchen. I like the idea of painting the back of the built-ins the same as the wall color or a contrast or white.

You are so right @decoenthusiaste the view is beautiful and one reason why I chose the apartment. the room is longer than it is wide, and I wanted the kitchen/bar to be included in the seating so the attached pic is how I was planning to lay it out. @cdrdesign I can't/change the table, its a gorgeous mahogany piece I had custom made and one I see keeping for some years yet! I dont plan a TV in this room, will put it in another room. This room in for living and entertaining guests. Sorry I dont have layout software, so you will have to make do with my scribbles using powerpoint! Comments (1)Hi 4evazx, I believe that you had given your designer a good and clear brief of your wants and needs and discussed all details with your designer. Your designer has done a great job as i can see from the floor plan and lighting layout. Trust your instinct and have faith in your designer. The only thing i would recommend is that you get your 12w downlight at 4000k. This is a natural daylight glow and is great in apartments. Do post pictures of your apartment when its done. Before that ask yourself, whether is the house you collecting, is it a standard or Premium flat?. How much Budget are you intending to spend on your house renovation. 7 years agoHello, your living room built-ins are beautiful. I agree with the comments above for wall colors and built-in colors. However, if you want to blend the living room with the kitchen's interior design, consider changing the knobs on the built-ins to a contemporary style like the ones similar to the photo example below.
Also, if you're not fixed on your first color choices, the built-in would also blend in with the kitchen walls and give it a contemporary look if you painted the built-ins a medium or dark gray (similar to your fireplace cover's graphite color), paint the inside of the built-ins the same color gray. The dark background would make your decor accessories 'pop'. Consider painting the walls white with gray undertones. The lighter walls will enhance your brown sofas, flooring and fireplace bricks.
In response to your latest question, if you prefer a cozier "feel" in the living room, go for medium to darker paint tones for the walls. If you want the built-in to stand out, then you'd have to consider a lighter color choice.But, if you're set on using gray, check how it looks in natural and artificial light. Make sure you apply several paint samples of your color choices on each wall in the room and evaluate which color works best with your built-in's new color and your large furniture pieces before choosing that final color.
