Tv room major help needed!!! Pics included
My husband purchased this awful, hideous sofa for the tv room. The chair on either side is a 'lazy boy' style. Unfortunately it's the first room anyone sees when they come by. How can I balance out the room and draw attention AWAY from the sofa. Do I need another chair? A different sized coffee table? Should the rug be round? I've put in different pieces as ideas for sizing. I also need to buy cushions once i decide on a colour. There is a dark brown bookshelf along the wall to the right.
This room had so much potential and uggghh.

7 years agoMy first suggestion is to move the sofa one turn to the right, so that it is not in front of the window if the size works for that. You would also not see so much of the sofa as you walk by the room. This would then allow you to put drapes on the window to compliment a rug. I would suggest some pattern in both the drapes and rugs.
I would then move both storage/tv units, they look like they match, to one wall and combine with the mirrors perhaps to create a wall of this type of unit. Because your room is dwarfed by the large sectional I would not add any more seating, limit the space to the sectional, coffee table and storage/tv wall.
I like your first octagon table and I think perhaps a rug with some design by still light in colour would work.
Finally invest in artwork that you love, sofa is his, artwork is yours:) and that will draw your eye towards that and away from the sofa. Cushions and throws can also lessen the impact of the black.

Need help for curtain color, rug and some designing tips
Comments (1)You have a very difficult room to work with here. For the curtains I would definitely choose something with pattern and a color that will "warm up the space" . I would buy longer panels that would go to atleast the top of the baseboard. I would also add a textured bamboo shade in a warm wood tone behind the curtains. By layering the window treatments you can completely hide the window when you don't want to see it without having to mess with the curtains. If you are going to keep all of the furnishings that you have in the room, I would defintely rearrange them. I would try to wall-mount the TV on the wall where the white sofa is now.You could place it on a hinged bracket which would allow you to swing it out for viewing and then push back out of the way when not in use. If cou cannot wall mount it, I still think that I would relocate it here. I would place the white sofa in front of the window (with it's lovely new blinds and curtains) which would supply a better "backdrop" for it than the white wall which it is now blending into. If you could, it would actually be a good idea to lose the white couch altogether, leave the black sofa where it is, and place a low bench or a pair of ottomans facing the black couch thus creating a conversation group while still being able to see over them when watching TV. I would define the seating group with a plush area rug with plenty of warm color that will compliment your new curtains while warming up the white floors. You are so right @decoenthusiaste the view is beautiful and one reason why I chose the apartment. the room is longer than it is wide, and I wanted the kitchen/bar to be included in the seating so the attached pic is how I was planning to lay it out. @cdrdesign I can't/change the table, its a gorgeous mahogany piece I had custom made and one I see keeping for some years yet! I dont plan a TV in this room, will put it in another room. This room in for living and entertaining guests. Sorry I dont have layout software, so you will have to make do with my scribbles using powerpoint! Comments (16)Thanks, lefty47. This is an older home, and just as One Plan guessed it is a soil stack from the upstairs bathroom. You are probably right that the cost of a custom solution may outweigh the benefits. Another idea I had, along the lines of the worktop bin suggested by One Plan, is a recessed spatula and long-handled utensil holder. I found out that Lee Valley sells motorized tv lift kits like the one used in the video above. It would be a matter of getting the contractor to build the box to go on the lift. I'm still a bit hung up on the idea, though it probably falls into your cost-outweighs-benefit category! I may bring this photo around with me when interviewing prospective contractors, just to see how they answer!...See More- PRO

7 years agoThat's a lot of sofa, but the positive aspect is, it looks really comfortable. Nobody should have to sit on the floor!
My strong instinct would be to remove the mirrors in the back and replace them with artwork -- something bold with immediate visual impact and color, to draw the eye away from the brown. Blue/greens would provide contrast; orange/golds would blend more and coalesce. I'm attaching three samples of my work -- The Land of Chief Joseph, Flecks of Gold, and Forever Yours -- as options of representational art that takes you places (which is one of the things that art does so well).
When it comes to artwork, you want to take your time and find something with which you fall in love, because as you can see by looking at your wall, whatever you put there will command the eye of people who enter. Original paintings are lifetime investments that pay back dividends all through your life, but they do have a price factor. You can find high quality prints as well, with a better selection online than what you find in many stores themselves, with their limited shelf space.

7 years agoDon't give up, pillows on your sofa will mask the sea of black. Using all the advice you've been given start with the art. You can stay neutral or pick your favorite color. Add textured light pillows with colors from your art. Don't buy more black furniture. Use a lighter wood or metal coffee table.

Due to a flood, We had to replace floor and ended up changing the whole colour scheme of the House! Now to many of your professional eyes, it may not be perfect, however, I have to say, I love it! It’s a great wee TV den!
