Living Room Road Block

Hi, we recently moved and the living room ("LR") in the old house had lots of built in bookcases, while the LR in new house has nothing of the sort.
We have lots of books and cannot figure out what to do with the empty space and the books. We'd like to have something modern but it's been six months and we cannot find anything we like.

Any help or tips would really be appreciated!!

I would do L- shaped units on either sides of the doors. Or if your entertainment center is (or not) the Besta series from IKEA, I would do some sort of geometric pattern with the cubes again in an L-shape on both walls.

Thanks- it is not an Ikea set. I'm not sure that the geometric works for me, but I appreciate your thoughts.

What do you think of a mirror for the backsplash on the kitchen? You cant see the pic here, but it faces a huge window on the other side of the room. I love the idea of grey/ dark cabinets, (with a wood coloured surface worktop) but might cost a small fortune to rework it. Will check on prices. The wallpaper idea is also really nice - much to mull through. so hard to decide! I'm thinking of replacing the dining table set with a booth + round table seating and maybe add a mirror behind it space. Not sure if i can fit a whole L booth into the dining space and still fit in a table, so might just settle for a booth on one side.

I think the block of wood idea would be good and then you could play around with the wire to get something that will stand without attaching to anything. Then decorate the wire the ones in the pic are also attached to the ceiling which is probably not a good idea in a rental, drill the holes after you have decided on wire.

Hi Dagobert Duck (interesting name), I am assuming that this is a townhouse in Asia, as you mention the dry kitchen and wet kitchen (terms used mostly in Singapore) and also from the visible lift on the plan that you shared. I would definitly advice you to keep the dry kitchen and place the dining table close to the dry kitchen or close to the bay window on the left. The space here is rather large and can easily accommodate a regular 2 metre table with 8 chairs. If you are concerned about the view of dining table as you enter the house, you could always place a round table near the entrance to block off the view. I agree with Elaine about placing the furniture away from walls. Place a bunch of fresh flowers or art/sculpture above the round table like in a hotel entrance. So the the first view you see when you enter the house is the table with flowers. Its difficult to give you any further advice as we have no idea what your final vision of the place is? Have you considered installing floating shelves in a similar finish as the dark brown parts of your entertainment center? This could be a simple way to get the extra book storage you're missing without adding more furniture to the space.

Do you think floating shelves would look good across the wall? It would leave a lot of empty space, no?

I would just get nice white bookcases for both walls in the third photo. Or have something custom made that turns the corner and fills both walls. Would look great, hold a ton of books, and might even inspire a little reading corner. See how far that gets you in terms of storage before considering the other side of the doors, since style-matching that nice unit will be hard.

Ideally the floating shelves would be custom and fill the wall. Though, I do quite like the idea posed by acm.

Thanks everyone! The blue carpeted room is the kids playroom...filled with toys and some bookcases.

For the corner built-ins, you think it would be too dark for the room? And worth trying to make it white lacquer with wood trim, or just go wood?

Nancy and acm, I love the corner bookshelf idea! Especially around the double doors. It will cozy up the room and make you feel at home. After moving, that is important!

The wall unit you currently have used to be sold at Bloomingdales home store. I know that company has lots of custom capabilities, why not go back to them and have something built?
