Saving original tile or installing new?
We are renovating our guest bathroom in our 1927 bungalow house, and can't agree on what to do about tile!
The bathroom has one inch white hexagon tile flooring with dark gray/black grout, which we uncovered when we ripped up the carpet that the previous owners had installed (ugh!). We think the tile is original to the house. The tile was in pretty rough shape- rust stains, cracks and breaks from the carpet nails with a corner area missing, adhesive residue, and a hazy buildup over the grout.
My husband and I are at odds- he desperately wants to restore, patch, and save the tile floor, while I think it would be better in the long run and for resale to replace the tile (as much as I like the original tile!). What do you think?? Try to save the old, knowing it won't be perfect, or install new marble hex tile? Do you think the charm of having original tile outweighs the value of having perfect new tile?
(So far, we have reglazed the original tub and installed large marble tiles in the shower, with insets backed with 1 inch marble hex tile. We will have a navy marble top vanity, and Delta champagne bronze fixtures throughout.)

These colours will definitely give a touch of elegance and express a modern look theme! Comments (16)Thanks, lefty47. This is an older home, and just as One Plan guessed it is a soil stack from the upstairs bathroom. You are probably right that the cost of a custom solution may outweigh the benefits. Another idea I had, along the lines of the worktop bin suggested by One Plan, is a recessed spatula and long-handled utensil holder. I found out that Lee Valley sells motorized tv lift kits like the one used in the video above. It would be a matter of getting the contractor to build the box to go on the lift. I'm still a bit hung up on the idea, though it probably falls into your cost-outweighs-benefit category! Comments (8)if you lighten the cabinets etc, then the stone will appear more prominent. if that is what you want, that is fine. I sensed that you did not like the current counter. I would contact a marble/granite installer to see if they think that the cracks can be filled and polished out. it is pretty common to do this on new installations if it is feasible. they may try to charge you as as much as you would spend on a fabricating a counter out of a new slab if they did not do the original installation....See More
