Need advice: Can you use 2 different kitchen bench top surfaces?

Is it possible to mix bench top surfaces? e.g Can I use a stone bench-top on a kitchen island, but then have Stainless steel on the rest of the kitchen benchtops? Alternatively can Granite go on bench top and Stone on the Island bench top? Or would it look too much of a mish-mash?

Not recommended especially with 2 completely different materials.

There are many examples on houzz of contrasting counters for perimeter and island. For example butcher block on island and stone on perimeter or a solid color on one and something with movement on another. I would only mix two stones if one had movement and one was fairly solid. The stainless on perimeter and something else on island sounds good to me. Here is a pic of stainless counters with what looks like a stone breakfast bar.

Hi Few points: 1. It's not an independent residential apartment. It is a flat in a 25storey block 2. I have attached the floor plan for reference. The entrance is not too huge. 3. It's good to know that you guys have liked the Bathroom & kitchen design. The tiling work is in progress and it has come out well. I will take few snaps and post 4. When I say resort look - I understand and mean a simplistic natural looking design. More towards wood, nature, green, matt finish etc... Hope i am not confusing anyone here 5. Do you think the bathroom & kitchen design gels with what I mean by resort look. 6. The foyer area is a small (not too big) entrance. It's like a passage as you can see in the pics I posted earlier. When you enter you don't see the entire living room rather you see the wall (kitchen wall), where we intend to keep our dining table. Some thoughts on designing that wall is also requested Thanks!

Hi @leewinnie, it is TRUE that white countertops turn yellow, or amber overtime, and not an old wives' tale as suggested. Just wondering if some of the guests at the dining table might potentially be facing the shoe rack? That looks good. Thanks for the example. Yeah, it helps to hear your initial gut reaction to mixing materials. I'm probably thinking I won't do it, unless it is a Stainless steel perimetre with granite island.

We have done similar things for lots of clients, working with a TriStone or solid timber Island and then stainless rear benchtop. They can look really tidy with the right elements incorporated into the kitchen for a contemporary yet industrial look
