U-shape kitchen VS island kitchen

I have a narrow lot which i can't seem to find a u-shape kitchen floor plan. We are about to meet with out designer and my husband is not convinced that it is possible to have a u-shape kitchen in a narrow lot. He thinks it takes up too much space and we will have to sacrifice on the space in the living area. He also wants a walk-in pantry.

I also need more bench space as my cooking style requires me to have several appliance running at once (slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer and sometimes the kettle). I don't know how that will work in kitchens with islands.

1. does anyone have a u-shape kitchen and a walk in pantry in a narrow floor plan ?

2. i have a u-shape kitchen now and finds that kitchens with the sink on the island extremely non-functional for one who may need ample of bench space.

3. Is a butlers pantry a good idea

Everything is possible and a lot has to do with design and clever cabinetry mechanisms. And obviously how much you want to invest! You mentioned your kitchen was on a narrow floor plan but do you have depth to the space? Do you have some measurements of the space you have to work with? It might be easier to visualize what you are trying to achieve...

Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Hi Few points: 1. It's not an independent residential apartment. It is a flat in a 25storey block 2. I have attached the floor plan for reference. The entrance is not too huge. 3. It's good to know that you guys have liked the Bathroom & kitchen design. The tiling work is in progress and it has come out well. I will take few snaps and post 4. When I say resort look - I understand and mean a simplistic natural looking design. More towards wood, nature, green, matt finish etc... Hope i am not confusing anyone here 5. Do you think the bathroom & kitchen design gels with what I mean by resort look. 6. The foyer area is a small (not too big) entrance. It's like a passage as you can see in the pics I posted earlier. When you enter you don't see the entire living room rather you see the wall (kitchen wall), where we intend to keep our dining table. Some thoughts on designing that wall is also requested Thanks!

Hi Fred, Thanks for the want of the precise measurements. The U shape area in my kitchen is 64" - 104 - 99" (left - centre - right). Height of the kitchen area is 107". The wall with the fridge has total length of 99" Fridge is 32" wide, 29" deep, 73" high (I bought this fridge on a good bargain but realized it was slightly oversized in this kitchen area, but got to live with it now) The wall beside the fridge is 23" deep I know some gap has to be left between this wall, the fridge and the wall mounted/countertop cabinets for ventilation I guess. So I'd say the cabinets on this wall will have a length of only 63"/64"? The microwave is 18.5 wide, 13" deep, 10.5" high The oven is 24" wide, 24" deep, 24" high. The wall next to the fridge which will have this feature cabinet 42" wide, 110" high which is next to the main door. I'm thinking the feature wall is kind of plain, but it covers up where the fridge is sticking out.

I think you need 3 planes to maximise benchspace if possible. U shapes not that efficient though as you have corners which are dodgy. My fave layout (which I now have in new kitchen) is back wall with oven/stove top and butler's behind, then island bench (which is completely clear of everything) and then side wall with window for sink.

Mind you my kitchen is still being installed so maybe I'll hate it in reality (oh and I have lots of space).

my u shaped kitchen fits within a space 5m x 2.9m .. the space between fridge and cooktop is for using the mixer and food processor, space between cooktop and sink is for standing slow cooker, toaster and air fryer and the kettle stands at the other end of the sink with plenty of benchspace all around for preparation areas ..the two corner floor cabinets are 1050 square with 45cm doors and easily fit all the already mentioned large appliances as well as coffee machine, icecream makers, slow cooker etc within easy reach and the pantry is used for food storage and has no sink or counters
