Help Designing Our Dining Room - Round or Rectangle?

We are ready to furnish our formal dining room and need a lot of design advice. Our home does have an eat in kitchen area so this room would be used to host bigger groups of people. We have two young kids and often host other young ones so we want this space to be kid (spill) friendly yet elegant enough to host an adults only meal from time to time. I am attaching measurements and photos of the space.

The first decision we want to make is if we should go with a round table vs. rectangular table. We really like the idea of a large round table, but not sure what size would work in our space while comfortably accommodating 8 adults (with the potential of pulling up 2 more chairs for a total of 10 people - less comfortably). Is that possible given the dimensions of our room? Should we just stick with a rectangle table?

Hi Few points: 1. It's not an independent residential apartment. It is a flat in a 25storey block 2. I have attached the floor plan for reference. The entrance is not too huge. 3. It's good to know that you guys have liked the Bathroom & kitchen design. The tiling work is in progress and it has come out well. I will take few snaps and post 4. When I say resort look - I understand and mean a simplistic natural looking design. More towards wood, nature, green, matt finish etc... Hope i am not confusing anyone here 5. Do you think the bathroom & kitchen design gels with what I mean by resort look. 6. The foyer area is a small (not too big) entrance. It's like a passage as you can see in the pics I posted earlier. When you enter you don't see the entire living room rather you see the wall (kitchen wall), where we intend to keep our dining table. Some thoughts on designing that wall is also requested Thanks!

Landscaping design with neighbor's garage

I agree with the others - ask your neighbor about painting the side of the garage that faces your yard. Depending on your style of decor, you can treat this as a part of your yard and change the appearance completely. Consider a low fence to separate your yard from the street/driveway, something similar to the red fence shown, to provide you a smaller "room" for entertaining. I live in an area where the side of the neighbors house defines the property line and have decorated the side of the neighbors house with various items to break up the expanse of wall (old window frames with the glass missing, sections of old iron fences, bird houses, etc); it really helps to cozy up the space. A trench filled with gravel and topped with larger rocks will help with the water issue and direct the water to other areas of the yard. A brick or paver patio would be lovely for establishing a conversation/grill area. The pictures submitted by PC have some great ideas. You already have your accent colour as your sofa pillows (log roll pillows). I would take one of them shopping with me to get a rug that has that colour in it. It doesn't need to be a lot of that colour (I love the idea of burgandy rug here...but it might be too much with your monotone scheme). You can find a large rug that incorporates that red/raspberry in it so that you have a colour that is now your accent.

Hi Mr Martini! Congratulations on the new BTO! Hiring a good interior designer will definitly help with designing your new home. And seeing that you are a family man, I imagine you would want as little hassle as possible. A good interior designer will listen to your ideas of how you want your home to look like, and make it happen as best as possible, taking into consideration your family's lifestyle, HDB limitations on renovation, your budget, etc. While my husband and I did hire an interior designer for our resale flat, I unfortunately will not recommended them for they gave us more headache than I felt necessary for the tiniest of problems. So do ask around and see if anyone can recommend a good interior designer. Back to your love for Scandinavian design! I was going for the Scandinavian style too only to later realise along the design process, that we were not loving the bland colours and minimalism and somehow, we managed to end up with a relaxing resort-themed home which we're loving. In fact, a recent Houzz article tells us that the Scandinavian colour palette is moving away from pale cool shades which I find fun and refreshing. A round will likely work better with the shape and function of the space. Often laying out the shapes and sizes can be helpful to see how it will look in the space. Using cardboard, painters tape, blankets, etc can help simulate the table. We often suggest 24" per person for elbow room. Then as far as wall or furniture clearance, a minimum of about 30-36". If you have more room that that, even better. A 70" round will fit 8-10 people. Chairs size and level of individual comfort will impact the space allowed per person, but this size will function well. Round with a pedestal base it wil always allow for a couple more chairs to squeeze in. Get chairs with no arms and a 60” table would be good in that space it seats 8-10 adults

Coming back to this post as we are ready to move forward! We decided on a 72" round dining table. We looked at a lot of 60" tables in local design rooms and they seemed to barely fit 6-8 adults. I know chair style / size will play heavily into how many we can fit, but I think 72" will give us a lot more wiggle room. I plan to start a new thread for more specific ideas on pieces for our dining room. Thanks so much for the input thus far!
