Help with kitchen floorplan

I'm trying to finalize my kitchen floor plan. We are knocking out walls and opening up.

I'm attaching a floor plan, my OLD floor plan, and the picture I showed the designer, I wanted to remove the island and combine the kitchen/dining with the table in the kitchen. This is the plan I have liked best so far. I'm not sure about the entry area though, I don't know if I like the half wall and little freestanding cabinet thing he put in. Anyone have any other ideas? I want to use the former breakfast area as a place for my kids to do homework, crafts, mail center, etc.

Hello Musikal,

I love your inspiration photo! These are so important to help everyone "see" the same vision.

It is difficult to make out the architect's notes on the layout so I cannot comment in depth. I see the half wall at the entry but not sure what "freestanding cabinet" you are referring to. Is it possible for you to post a close-up shot of that area?

One thing that jumps out at me is that your prep areas seem like they may be limited. It appears you have a 48" range on the drawing (again, not sure on that) so I can only assume you do a fair amount of cooking and entertaining. I would just caution you to make sure you are comfortable with the amount of prep/counter space available on your single run of cabinetry. In your inspiration pictures, the table is set up to utilize as an island prep area - closer to the cabinetry, one side open (no chairs) for working and at a comfortable height for both prep and dining. Your drawing floats the dining table further from the main work area since that area is more narrow.

David - Thanks! Appreciate that you even drew out the plan. :) You are absolutely right, it's been difficult finding an optimum layout. In fact, our current layout is more or less the same as your plan. Would you have chosen different furniture - a smaller sofa or a different dining table perhaps? (Also, I'm curious: is there a good reason why the architect had the pillar like that?) Mona - Do you mean having a buffet at the entry? I currently do have a sideboard, though it wouldn't fit at the entry - it's about 67" wide by 18" deep. It's currently placed in the middle of the long wall. There's actually still sufficient clearance between it and the 3-seater sofa in David's plan. plague - The household shelter is a local (Singapore) building requirement. Its walls are reinforced and is meant to be a shelter in times of emergency. It can't be removed, and any renovations carried out cannot affect its integrity (there is a list of permitted and prohibited works). Normally it is just used as a pantry or storeroom.

Correction: to construct two separate 2 ft run concrete slab at the each opposite end of the 9ft length kitchen (with access of 3 ft space at each end but has 5ft space in the middle)
