Help with door at the top of our stairs
Our house is 111 years old, and the people who lived here before us finished the attic and added this staircase decades ago. It is hideous, to put it mildly. We plan to take out the carpet and put down wood steps - a subject for another post. But my first question is how to fix the door at the top of the stairs - the trim is hanging off the edge because the door is flush with the rise of the last step (which is really the entry to the door). There is no room at all for a landing, which would be ideal. There is a tiny bit of room to push the door back a few inches - would that make things look more normal up there? I can't even find pictures of what this situation should look like!
I know why it looks like this - he needed to create a staircase in a limited amount of room. But I'm hoping it can look at least slightly less awful. Maybe??

It's good to know that you guys have liked the Bathroom & kitchen design. The tiling work is in progress and it has come out well. I will take few snaps and post 4. When I say resort look - I understand and mean a simplistic natural looking design. More towards wood, nature, green, matt finish etc... Hope i am not confusing anyone here 5. Do you think the bathroom & kitchen design gels with what I mean by resort look. 6. The foyer area is a small (not too big) entrance. It's like a passage as you can see in the pics I posted earlier. When you enter you don't see the entire living room rather you see the wall (kitchen wall), where we intend to keep our dining table. Comments (3)Work with a landscape designer/architect. Likely, some sort of retained, back filled walls will be necessary to create an area large enough to place a table with chairs & umbrella. If you entertain multiple generations, keep your patio to a single level. I would suggest integrating planting areas within the patio area, to introduce color & eventually partial shade. Designing a pergola into this composition would be a nice addition to. Get the blessings of any governing/HOA body that you need approvals from, which your design professional of choice should be able to facilitate for you. Comments (7)@Kayla: I love IKEA hacking too! ;) Hiding the game consoles is definitely a possibility; I can't put the speakers in a cabinet though.. It's a deal breaker for the hubs. Invest in a high quality sound system, the speakers have to be out for acoustic reasons. If only I had known that before I agreed so easily.. ;-/ @groveraxle: I love that example! You're probably right about the shelves.. there's already too much going on on that wall! I'll look into wall art instead. ;) And yes! Now I realize that part of what was annoying me was that crazy up down profile. I'll have to try and streamline it as much as possible. Maybe put one of the small rear speakers on the left with a trailing plant on top to hide it; a small end cabinet around the same height on the right for the other speaker and to make room to clear off the top of the console? @Mystic Home: That's lovely!! Using electronics as a plant stand, vase to soften the look of that speaker, putting the speaker in an end cabinet.. genius! That might be the best (and cheapest) way to make everything "disappear". There was stair nosing up there, but I removed it since we pulled up the floors in the attic bedroom. It definitely didn't look any better! Now that I'm looking at it, maybe if it ran all the way across it would work? I think we will definitely be replacing the trim and painting it white.einportlandor

5 years agoHere's a picture from the interior, from when it was on the market (we bought it last month). The entire sink wall is gutted now so that we can turn the sink around and put it IN the bathroom. ;) The new wall be roughly in the area where the front of the sink is now, but flush with the dormer wall to the left, if that makes sense - basically it will be almost in line with the wall that the dresser is on in this pic.
Anyway, hopefully you can see that there's no room for any kind of sliding or barn door, sadly! This is a wide angle lens, so proportions are skewed quite a bit. The ceiling where the fan is is actually flat, but there's just not much of it. The slope of the roof makes this doorway a bit of a challenge, for sure!

We have been deliberating over this and we think we might have come up with a solution.
either a double door, barn door or pocket door at the top of the stairs and a glass door at the bottom. Obviously both doors would need to match. We would also have some sort of glass balustrading to complement the doors. Not easy.
