Living Room Design Dilemma

I’m worried that my art may be too big and/or not the right size??

I bought a large piece of art to fill the space in my living room but I’m having second thoughts due to the size/square shape. The painting is non refundable and I have other walls it could potentially work size wise in my house but the wall colors in those rooms don’t work as well as this wall. Please let me know your thoughts and if you think this wall will work or if I should rethink where I put it.

The first two pics are my room. The second two pics are to show you what the painting looks like.

What size was the square one? I like the rectangular one better.

Hi, Could you add a pic of the lounge area outside bedrooms? There seem to be too many palettes of colours within furniture from white tv cabinet to dark brown book shelf to light brown dining to black/blue/beige sitting pieces. Tie up sitting by adding few cushions in possibly black/white/blue combo. Extend sitting area of living through the entire span of AC wall. You need a larger rug for this space. Angle dining table between 30 to 45 degrees with long length between detached counter corner to bookshelf end towards lounge. This will add the flow to lounge. Add a table runner along the centre of the long length. You need larger artwork pics or a collection of art pieces on living room wall behind beige sofa. Lounge can have a console and wall with a composition of family picture frames to personalise space. Remove blue artwork in the last pic. Instead, you can add a composition of wall shelves with artefacts on them or wall hooks with hanging artefacts. Rugs, table lamps, floor lamps and few bold decorative pieces will add the required warmth. A round centre table in the living room can be good.

You already have your accent colour as your sofa pillows (log roll pillows). I would take one of them shopping with me to get a rug that has that colour in it. It doesn't need to be a lot of that colour (I love the idea of burgandy rug here...but it might be too much with your monotone scheme). You can find a large rug that incorporates that red/raspberry in it so that you have a colour that is now your accent.

work out the wall space you want to cover, measure this on the floor. then start laying out our design within the space on the floor to create your design. There has to be lines running through the collage so there is a method to the madness- we don't want a messy looking arrangement, there must be a flow. You can line up the matts with outside edge of other frames etc. Layout all of your pics on the floor and mix up the frame styles and sizes amongst your layout. Take photos of your layout and then start hanging. My tip is don't start hanging until you have your plan 100% !!! lots of neck stretches too! i recently put together this collage and need a neck massage afterwards ;-)

Great room. Love all your selections. That rug is stellar. I do like the canvas but I don't think it's right for your room. This is how it might appear. IMO it doesn't seem strong enough to compete with your furnishings.

It’s fine. Can’t go wrong with big art pieces, it’s the little ones that look off when hung alone.

Check greatbigcanvas.com for a canvas. No need for a frame and they offer multiple sizes for the artwork.

I might move the tree or say goodbye if it's not real. Put the standing lamp there and get another lamp for your table.

I think a large rectange would look better there. Do you have a wall across from the sofa where you can place your art?

We think the piece is really lovely, but we might look into something different for over your sectional. Something more rectangle rather than a square. Or you could even try a set of three smaller prints like in our design below.

Find one to hang 5" above the sofa that will leave at least 10" between the top and crown. It can be as wide as 75% of that side of the sectional.

Definitely not too big... you could even go with something bigger and more rectangular to fill in more of the empty space above the sectional. I think people tend to be afraid of buying large artwork and always end up getting pieces that are a little too small.

Absolutely nothing wrong with large art! But the space over your sofa is rectangular and this particular piece of art is square. I would hang this one on a different wall and look for something horizontal. Perhaps consider a pair of paintings to fill the space. Remember to not go too high or too close to your sofa, there should be a bit of breathing room there.

If you look above at my comments before you posted I found a rectangular piece that I think will work better. Appreciate any input on the new piece!

The art Beverly showed you is much better for your room. The prints you chose are too muted/ white in color. That’s why there looking off. The rest of your room is really nice. Please get rid of the fake plants and check out nicer pillows after you’ve chosen your art.

The art is pretty. Art is a personal choice, in that room I think I would do something that is more of a strong, bold vibe. I do feel that the area would do well with something that is more rectangular also. Maybe a 60"×30"? Hard to say since we don't know the size of the sofa.

In my opinion, art always looks better with a frame, even a minimal skinny frame.

Perhaps you can switch walls and put the square first piece on the wall where the floating shelves are. Then, choose a selection from the shelves to hang over the sofa, using a rectangular space so that there is space between the sofa, eye-level viewing, and then the top row being just above the first, not up to the ceiling. That would use both walls. I would also suggest replace the plant with a real one. Very nice selection of furniture!

The square was 50x50 this rectangle is 41.5x60. Agree that the rectangle looks much better in that spot and I aesthetically like the painting better for that room too. Thanks for your input!

Pull the furniture away from the wall, it all looks smashed in. Switch the photo wall and the art piece and hang the art piece lower.
