Countertops urgent advice please.

Hello everybody. I'd love to hear from anyone who has used Della Terra Quartz on kitchen countertops. I am about to change my kitchen countertops (huge investment) so I just want to make sure I select a material that is not going to stain or chip easily. My installer has said that he would seal the quartz. A few (probably silly) questions:

- Is this quartz porous? I understand that other products like Cambria do not need a sealer.

- Do sealers wear off?

- Would you recommend any other brand over Della Terra?

This is a considerable expense so I just want to make sure I do my research first. Thanks so much for your advice.

Quartz is non-porous and does not require any sealing - ever. I'd find a new installer.

Hmmm, that's weird, because quartz doesn't need sealing, it's non-porous. Perhaps your installer offered to seal it to reassure you, but that's simply not something that it's done with quartz. It's a man-made stone, very durable, very strong, and easy to maintain. Granite needs sealing once a year, for example. I would talk with the installer once again or find another one. I'm not familiar with Della Terra Quartz but with MSI Stone and Caesarstone I have only the best experience, I highly recommend them.

These colours will definitely give a touch of elegance and express a modern look theme! Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Hi Fred, Thanks for the want of the precise measurements. The U shape area in my kitchen is 64" - 104 - 99" (left - centre - right). Height of the kitchen area is 107". The wall with the fridge has total length of 99" Fridge is 32" wide, 29" deep, 73" high (I bought this fridge on a good bargain but realized it was slightly oversized in this kitchen area, but got to live with it now) The wall beside the fridge is 23" deep I know some gap has to be left between this wall, the fridge and the wall mounted/countertop cabinets for ventilation I guess. So I'd say the cabinets on this wall will have a length of only 63"/64"? The microwave is 18.5 wide, 13" deep, 10.5" high The oven is 24" wide, 24" deep, 24" high. The wall next to the fridge which will have this feature cabinet 42" wide, 110" high which is next to the main door. I'm thinking the feature wall is kind of plain, but it covers up where the fridge is sticking out.

Hi Alice, that's a really good question - challenging dilemma with a strong limitation (no hacking!) but I believe workable. Would you consider making changes to the backsplash? Adding some strip lighting will help too. Given the pink checkered floor tiles cannot be changed, I'd favour going for very neutral and clean looking cabinetry - to reduce visual clutter and bring in some harmony. Regardless of colour of finish choice, I prefer cabinetry that's not see-through. How about natural wood finishes: All-white with wood countertops might work as well: I leave it to the professionals to give their advice!

While most Della Terra Quartz i safe for food contact, they do make 13 colors that are certified as "splash zone only." (i.e. unsafe to use in your kitchen). So when selecting a Della Terra color for your kitchen, be sure to check that you haven't chosen one of those 13 colors:

Stick to MSI or Caesarstone please. Neither needs any sealing in any color for safety or maintenance.. DO try to stay far from deep colors ( the grays) in Caesarstone. Not a food safety issue, just prone to some spots..........sometimes.

MSI only makes 10 colors safe for food contact. All the rest are for splash zone only (i.e. bathrooms). Do your research before chosing an MSI color. (Listed on NSF database as "M S International")

All colors of Caesarstone are safe for food contact, except for their "Himalayan Moon" color. As long as you don't choose that particular color, you should be fine with any other Caesarstone choice in your kitchen, food safety-wise.

We've had a great experience with Quartz Master, as well as with Caesarstone and MSI. No complaints from our customers whatsoever. And no need to seal quartz slabs, ever.

Not sure what role your installer has for the counters; but I would talk to the fabricator as they know what works with what they work on.. Quartz does not get sealed in general.

Before even doing that really make sure you LOVE how your kitchen functions, replacing counters only adds the pretty not improved function and a huge cost at that.

Our CAMBRIA Quartz Countertops are now 10 years old and the section in front of the window is fading (turning whitish). BEWARE!!!

UPDATE: CAMBRIA does NOT honor their Warranty if it is UV (that is Light) damage.
