This space makes me crazy…. The tray, the inset wall, the fan…. Nothing lines up! Help me balance it please.

What struck me is that the TV is not centered in the alcove.

Presumably the tray is centered on something? Can you show us the whole room?

I’ll post photos later. It’s a work in progress changing the furniture. Yep, that wall is not centered to anything. Neither is the tray. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Thanks, lefty47. This is an older home, and just as One Plan guessed it is a soil stack from the upstairs bathroom. You are probably right that the cost of a custom solution may outweigh the benefits. Another idea I had, along the lines of the worktop bin suggested by One Plan, is a recessed spatula and long-handled utensil holder. I found out that Lee Valley sells motorized tv lift kits like the one used in the video above. It would be a matter of getting the contractor to build the box to go on the lift. I'm still a bit hung up on the idea, though it probably falls into your cost-outweighs-benefit category! I may bring this photo around with me when interviewing prospective contractors, just to see how they answer!

Hi Fred, Thanks for the want of the precise measurements. The U shape area in my kitchen is 64" - 104 - 99" (left - centre - right). Height of the kitchen area is 107". The wall with the fridge has total length of 99" Fridge is 32" wide, 29" deep, 73" high (I bought this fridge on a good bargain but realized it was slightly oversized in this kitchen area, but got to live with it now) The wall beside the fridge is 23" deep I know some gap has to be left between this wall, the fridge and the wall mounted/countertop cabinets for ventilation I guess. So I'd say the cabinets on this wall will have a length of only 63"/64"? The microwave is 18.5 wide, 13" deep, 10.5" high The oven is 24" wide, 24" deep, 24" high. The wall next to the fridge which will have this feature cabinet 42" wide, 110" high which is next to the main door. I'm thinking the feature wall is kind of plain, but it covers up where the fridge is sticking out.

Lots of unnecessary "architectural" elements in this space. I'm bothered more by the two "doorways" they created on either side of the TV niche. I would be doing some research to see if I could remove some of those partial walls.

Is this a condo or apartment? Looks like they had to use soffits to run hvac?

I think the contrasting wall color adds to the issue.

I would paint the gray the same color as the ceiling, center the TV and replace the fan with an all white unit.

Hi. Can the tray be drywalled to be level with the rest of the ceiling? Serious question, I don't know if this is a practical solution or would create more problems than it solves.

At least center the tv in the space, and remove the other objects near it. Can you get a new console for underneath? One that is at least 1/3 longer than the one you have?

It’s true that it would help to see the entire space (and even to have a floor plan of the room), but I can immediately see what is unsettling to you. I can also see why they did the recessed ceiling the way they did; the ducting is on the left and they simply framed it to accommodate the ceiling fan. As a designer, I would have a few questions for you about how you use this room. Do you use the ceiling fan? What’s the height of the ceiling from the floor to the ceiling with the ducting? The door to the right has an entry vestibule that I would remove. That would be a simple fix to immediately help balance the space better. But you still have a few elements that I would change. The cabinet on the left with the wall with the switch on it is something I would remove as well. I would build out that entire wall with cabinetry and make the space feel more open and more cohesive.

There's nothing to be done with the ceiling since it wasn't correct to begin with. Do not focus any attention on the ceiling.

I'd add a deep paint color to the back wall of the alcove and install a wall hung unit below a larger sized TV screen

As mentioned by chispa, If possible I would remove the walls creating a hallway to the room on the right and run the back wall behind the TV straight across. I don't know if anything can be done on the left side with what looks like a kitchen cabinet stuck in a niche but at least with what's illustrated below the tray ceiling looks somewhat more centered.

All white ceiling fan fixture. Remove what appears to be a kitchen desk type cabinetry to the left and create a focal point with shelves and complete cabinetry more in style with a living area as opposed to a kitchen. Beverly FLA has a great rendition of wall color and media changes. Removing the wall to the right is most likely not going to work due to flooring issue, you would need to correct flooring where the wall is removed.

Consider merging the two sections visually by filling in the left indent so it‘s flush and complementary to the middle (won’t have to deal with repairing flooring). As well, the ceiling now won’t feel as off and in general, the entire space will feel less choppy.

Another poster suggested removing the bumpout that leads into the hallway. If it doesn't present a structural issue I would suggest that also. Might also suggest removing the single thickness wall on the opposite side of the tv. That should make the room less choppy.

I just put them into a quick layout so you can see examples. I would alter the walls, it’s easier to work around them & use your money on the items that will go inside those spaces & can also be taken with you if you ever left. If you’re handy, this would be an easy cabinet/bookcase build. Obviously I made up random dimensions but you’ll get the idea.

We will replace flooring so that isn’t an issue. Te the cabinet space so that can go too. The pantry doors are an eyesore as well (also unbalanced). I’m concerned that if we take out the sidewalls, there will be a level issue. Can you tell when the floor and current back walls meet?

Oh & also, I wouldn’t worry about the ceiling too much until you determine how you want to create intent in the space. It’s wonky but you can drop the recess fairly easy to remove conflict. I think it’s noticeable because your furniture isn’t to scale with the space. You need to fill the recess & mount your tv. That’s the easiest way to draw your eyes forward & not up. Right now, it’s the only thing that creates focus. I also would not alter the hallway entry, not only does it give you a very intentional space, it creates balance on the wall. The reason it seems heavy on one side is because the upper cabinet & empty middle. Unless you’re looking to make structural changes, have at it, but if the purpose is to work around what’s there….that would be my opinion. Also, forgot this example.

Perhaps it would be easier to simply fill-in the tray ceiling and re-purpose the niche on the left into a coffee bar.

I agree with the comment to remove the additional wall around the doorway on the right side. I am almost 100% sure that is not structural. You will need to patch the tile in that area, so i am assuming you have extra pieces of tile in storage for that. Filling in the tray ceiling would be quite a bit of work with framing and drywall finish overhead.

Great to see the Houzz community stepping in with suggestions and even some rendering/ image options. Very cool!
