Need a help for my Kitchen designed or layout, please help

Hi, I am looking for an advice in regard to kitchen layout.
We are renovating our home- and we have to finalize the plan soon.
It is very small house 34X44 feet long. We planned to layout open kitchen concept.
My Architect came out with an idea how layout and did it- but I had modified a bit. The first plan was designed to leave some column supports on the first floor to add the second floor.
I asked to take out the middle wall(pantry) from mudroom , so kitchen have a much space for the for the middle center counter to place the chairs or the stool for some informal dining on daily basis, and have a wall with cabinets and counters where kitchen is leading to dining room. The pantry will move next to refrigerator.
I am looking for the advice- Is it good choice to closed the opening where kitchen and dining was open?
Or
should I ask to have a wall between the living room, and kitchen instead with much supporting columns. Means open dining and kitchen and have a wall an opposite side(what I asked in Kitchen_2 pic)?
I am attaching my current layout, the Architect designed (Kitchen_1) and modified (Kitchen_2)

I have just seen this photo, U shape Island I think it will work in your space and it will allow u to open up more to both dining and living room, I think nobody can decide except u to which space to open up more.

in Kitchen_1 is the thing in front of Fridge a pantry ? also what is the point of having 2 entrances to the kitchen from dining room side (I know u have changed it in your modified layout but I am asking about the architect point of view)?

So you just want to enclose the top area to make it a place to sleep? Does it need to have a kitchen and bathroom or just a sleeping area? I am not an architect but you might want to ask more direct questions like " How can I enclose this upper floor to make it livable?". It looks like you live in a very mild climate. Perhaps you should put up wood walls with windows that match the design on the balcony panels. I am not a builder so I hope someone else has some ideas for you.

Hi Alice, that's a really good question - challenging dilemma with a strong limitation (no hacking!) but I believe workable. Would you consider making changes to the backsplash? Adding some strip lighting will help too. Given the pink checkered floor tiles cannot be changed, I'd favour going for very neutral and clean looking cabinetry - to reduce visual clutter and bring in some harmony. Regardless of colour of finish choice, I prefer cabinetry that's not see-through. How about natural wood finishes: All-white with wood countertops might work as well: I leave it to the professionals to give their advice!

Oh u have answered my questions in your post sorry Lazy reader me :), Well I like Kitchen_2 more, but I feel there is a waste in space, 2 ideas right now, what about having an L shape Island u need a loading surface in front of pantry also u will get more storage, the other idea what about keeping only one opening to the Living room and make the kitchen U shape?

This does not seem like a prticularly small house to me, sal. You seem to have quite a bit of space to work with. If you like to cook, I like plan 3 best (yours?). An L-shape with an island is a desirable working arrangement. The other two plans will route some traffic through the working kitchen - not ideal, if you are cooking there.

Consider these ideas also: If you put cooking area on left leg of the "L" it can feature a nice looking hood arrangement, which can be the visual backdrop for the entire new large space. And I might bring the wall back some at its left end, making a little more openness to the dining area - leave just base cabinets and counter to finish that section at the left. Then move the fridge and pantry to the right side of the L - against what seems to be a piece of bearing wall structure.

I prefer the middle option since it provides some separation from the foyer plus some additional wall storage.

Thank you Mark! Yes, I love cooking and exactly I thought about what you just said- it brings some trafic while I am there- which I currently do not prefer.............. That 's why I am thinking to have third option as well. We are also thinking the ideas as you brought up. Let's see what the outcome will be........... thanks again!!

The third option looks the best. You will have a nice open kitchen with a great big island. Great for a seating area.

i love option 3 , its more open that the other one, the kitchen is much bigger and will have more storage cupboard and its beutifully open to the living room and you can use the kitchen island for breakfast or any casual eating or coversation, while you still have a more formal dining room on the other side.

I like option 3 with some changes. First, the closet in the mudroom area is very small if that is the main coat closet on the first floor-especially if you live in a cold climate. I would move the entrance door around the corner across from the other door. Or it could be enlarged if you get rid of the window and bring the closet all the way to the lav and change the orientation of the bathroom fixtures so the lav door can be moved. You have room for a utility closet at the end of the bathroom I believe.

Second, I would curve the island counter when enlarging it.

Third, I would want a double sink. I have a large single basin now and hate it.

Fourth, the stove is a little close to the sink for my taste. You would probably doing a lot of work between the sink and the stove and I would rather have 36" of counter there. Looks like there is only 24". The sink, dishwasher or stove can go on the island. If the stove goes there it can be vented underneath if you get the type that has a down vent system.

Fifth, I like the kitchen to be more open to the dining room as well as the living room. So I would remove wall between the living room and kitchen put in a beam or extend the wall from the sink wall further. You could make the kitchen more of a galley style by removing the cabinets between the dining room and kitchen. Extend the island toward the dining room. Put the refrigerator at the end of the cabinets on the sink wall. Put the pantry next to it. if you need to move one or two appliances to the island. Keep the counter lower for the work area of the island and raise it for the eating side. This gives you the most open space.

Just my 2 cents. good luck with your remodel! Looking forward to seeing the final results.

Turning the island slightly would give you more travel area behind the island.
