One Chair, 15 Homes: Celebrating 15 Years of the Ghost Chair
Ubiquitous yet unique, the Ghost chair family, with its original star, the Louis Ghost, is a postmodern design icon
After the birth of the first polycarbonate chair, Kartell’s La Marie, in 1999, transparency had become big in the design scene. Prolific and world-famous French product designer, Philippe Starck followed it up in 2002 with the Louis Ghost chair – a sleek and cheeky twist on the Louis XVI armchair.
The Louis Ghost chair captures the quintessence of the baroque era. Unmistakably inspired by 18th century aesthetics and obviously modern in execution, the plastic armchair features a medallion-style arched back, fluted arms, and wide legs that create a graceful and geometric silhouette. The Louis Ghost is made using injected polycarbonate in a single mould, and its transparency gives it an ethereal presence. Despite its crystalline appearance, the chair is stable, durable, shock and weather resistant, and stackable up to six chairs high. Practical and beautiful!

The armless Victoria Ghost chair is significantly smaller than its predecessor, making its see-through style an unobtrusive addition. In this music corner, the chair doesn’t compete with the decor, but instead lets the earthy look stand out.
