Fun Houzz: Does Your Bathroom Reveal the Real You?

We all have sides of our personalities we tend to hide away – could your bathroom be the place you can truly be you?

Your bathroom is the one room of the house you can go a little wild – if you dare – and reveal a side of your personality that not even your closest confidantes might know about. If your alter ego doesn’t immediately spring to mind, think about what you’d do differently if you had another life to live. Who would you be? What would you do more of? Let these bathroom ideas spark some of your own, or at least get you in touch with those parts of yourself that are eager to come out.

The philosopher
If you find yourself yearning to discuss the ins and outs of surrealism or metaphysics, but your friends are more into celebrity gossip or talking about sport, use your me-time in the bathroom to ponder the meaning of life. Take these out-of-the-ordinary bathroom cabinets as your inspiration to think along different lines.

The fashionista
You may not be able to justify a wardrobe full of Chanel and Louis Vuitton, but if that’s what, deep down, you’d really love to have, start by channelling more Chanel in your life one room at a time.

The child at heart
Acting like a grown-up becomes necessary once you reach a certain age, but there’s no reason your inner child can’t come out to play now and then at home.

The hedonist
If people tend to think you’re a practical sort of a person who thinks in black and white, prove them wrong by creating a bathroom that lets you switch off and indulge all your senses – bubble bath, candles, fluffy towels and a bath mat to sink your toes into when it’s time to dry off and step back into the real world.

The nature lover
If your dream holiday involves shooting wildlife (with your camera), camping on a remote beach surrounded by the sound of crashing waves and swooping birds – but the rest of the family would rather head to a five-star island resort with a swim-up bar – could this bathroom soothe your soul?
Roth Architecture
The modernist
If you’d secretly love to get rid of all your possessions and simplify your life, it might be time to embrace your minimalist side.

The self-made billionaire
Do you feel like you’re living the wrong life? That, really, you’d be better suited to a jet-setting existence staying in top hotels across the globe and never lifting a finger to cook or clean? In the meantime, why not make your own home a little more luxurious?
Strata Landscape Architecture
The nudist
It’s not always practical to unleash your alter-ego when it involves shedding all your clothes, but there’s no reason you can’t do the next best thing and bathe au naturel, alfresco.

The artist
We’re all born creative, and many of us have a secret dream of casting off the shackles of conventional money making in favour of letting our inner artist shine. Don’t ignore the sculptor, musician or painter inside you – life is far more fun when you let that artist play.

The life of the party
Rubbing shoulders with the cool kids on the dance floor of the hippest nightclub in town might not be how you spend a typical Saturday night. But do you wish it were different?
Lisa Stevens & Company, Inc.
The exhibitionist
Some people thrive on attention and dream of finding fame and fortune on the stage. In this bathroom, you have permission to sing at full volume in the shower, put on a show, and dance as if everyone is watching.

The academic
Mucked up too much at school to get good marks? Stuck in a dead-end job with zero intellectual stimulation? Studying in your downtime could just provide the brain food you need.

The man of the house
If you’re outnumbered by the females in your household, or you tend to just go with the flow when it comes to the home, could it be time to take a stand – literally as well as figuratively – and put your own stamp on the bathroom?

The rebel
We’re all forced to tow the line to some degree – there are laws to live by, jobs to turn up to, and cultural norms to abide by, after all. But if a part of you wants to walk your own path, a symbol in your bathroom can serve as a reminder to stand up for what you believe in and that you can dance to your own tune … at least to a degree.

The lunatic
Realising we’re all a bit mad underneath it all can be liberating. Embracing your inner weirdness is easiest in the bathroom, especially if your partner is as batty as you are. As Dr Seuss once said: “We are all a little weird and life is a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.”
