Houzz Tours
Houzz Tour: Executive Flat Opens up to Sun, Breeze and Friends
The easy, breezy ambience was also designed for the owner to be able to do her photography work at home
The homeowners were both very involved in the aesthetics of the design as both work in the creative field. “They did their research for ideas and inspiration on Houzz,” Mesh Werk Studio interior designer Yenny Lee says. Asking for a cosy and breezy home with lots of natural elements – including their plant collection – the homeowners had a lot of input when it came to decorating. However they followed the designer’s lead when it came to the intricacies of space planning, design and renovation.
Lee proposed an open kitchen, with the living and dining areas only partially separated. Walls were removed to open up the cookspace as well as to capitalise on floor area (and daylight!) from the balcony. The designer used hard-wearing yet low-maintenance vinyl flooring for the social areas, but kept the balcony floor tiled so the owners can water their plants in the now-indoor space.
To maintain the clean, uncluttered look, Lee designed a long feature cabinet in the living area. Lining the length of one wall, it stores shoes, personal mementoes and entertainment media.

The bar counter extends from the kitchen towards the social spaces. Lee designed it as a seating area for casual dining, work, and gathering functions.
The colour palette for the flat is nature-inspired, taking its cue from the owners’ plant collection, says Lee. Wood finishes contrast with the concrete screed elements and a deep sage green feature wall.
Lee chose a matte-finished Silestone quartz surface in Kensho for its low-maintenance properties. “The colour and texture blends well with the nature-inspired palette,” Lee offers.

One of the bedrooms was converted to a shared workspace. “The wife is a photographer so sometimes she will conduct indoor photoshoots in this room”, Lee says.
The designer replaced the wall with a steel-framed sliding door with glass panels to maintain the open concept. “They also have the option to convert it to an enclosed room”, Lee says.

With the wall between the dining area and balcony removed, Lee recommended louvred windows instead of the fixed glass panel framed in black aluminium that the owners originally wanted. “This gives them the option to control the brightness and ventilation and makes a design statement as well”, Lee says.
Lee worked closely with the owners to select their furniture and decorative fittings, opting for a controlled colour palette and geometric shapes.
