Room Tour: A Cool Rooftop Lounge That’s a Pet-Lover’s Delight
This chill-out space takes its cues from colourful, quirky touches (of the canine and feline variety)
The owners of this newly-built home in a quiet residential estate had been living there for a year when they decided that change was in order. They “felt that the existing interior spaces were minimally designed and sparsely finished,” says Cynthia Liau, studio director of boutique interior design studio The Inside Job. The firm was tasked “to help enliven the spaces and enhance the character of each space.”
One of the project’s highlights – certainly not lacking in character – is the rooftop lounge, where the owners can kick back and indulge in their love for pets, funky, contemporary design, and entertaining.

The boldest of these colour accents, a red Ploum sofa by Ligne Roset, invites guests to settle in with a drink in hand. Complementing the sofa are bright artwork on the walls which are part of the owners’ collection of colourful canine paintings. The design team felt that the lounge could also serve as a gallery to showcase the owners’ love for dogs.
In response to the long and narrow space, Liau designed a full-height feature frame that runs along the whole length of one wall. It effectively adds depth and three-dimensional qualities to the space. “This feature frame incorporates the existing counter top and comes with new wine chillers, bar necessities and pantry cabinets. It also holds display cases, disguised storage and mesh niches to house canine sculptures” she adds.
Mirrors over the wine cabinets also add to the sense of space while flame-brushed tile cladding gives texture and depth.

Though monochromatic, the details are never boring. The large graphic rug – custom-designed by The Inside Job – depicts the road network in London, where the owners had previously lived.
“We matched the sofas with skeletal metal frame Agency chairs from CB2 so that the space is able to accommodate more guests and yet looks spacious,” says Liau. Cushions with feline faces are a cheeky companion to the canine artwork, while the coffee table with a photographic moon tabletop reflects the owners’ love for contemporary design.

The indoor lounge opens up to an outdoor terrace, where both the owners and their guests can enjoy the cool night breeze. Neutral-toned, comfy outdoor furniture dominates the terrace, with brightly-hued cushions and a Magis puppy adding fun, cheery accents.

The rooftop lounge was designed as both an area for hosting large social events as well as a private space for quiet evenings at home. Hence, it had to be fun and comfortable while also reflecting the owners’ tastes and personalities. Liau describes how they used existing provisions and worked with the room’s existing structure “to create a more inclusive space with a darker palette and occasional bright colour accents for a relaxing lounge space.”
