This basement bathroom in a Mayfair flat was transformed from a dated, enclosed space into a calm, light-filled retreat with a natural Scandinavian feel.
The brief was to create a timeless bathroom that felt warm and inviting whilst improving light and flow. A soft, neutral palette was introduced, combining stone-effect tiles with pale timber finishes to add warmth and texture.
A freestanding bath acts as a sculptural focal point, paired with brushed brass fittings for a subtle touch of luxury. The floating oak vanity enhances the sense of space while providing practical storage, and the illuminated mirror adds both function and ambience.
Open oak shelving with integrated lighting keeps the room feeling relaxed and uncluttered, while thoughtful lighting throughout helps lift the basement setting. The result is a serene, contemporary bathroom — a peaceful sanctuary in the heart of London.

This long, through-room layout featured three separate entrances — from the principal bedroom, the landing and a connecting door to the laundry — creating an unusually narrow footprint with complex circulation.
Horizontal bands of green and white pastella zellige-style tiles were introduced to visually broaden the room, their full-width placement helping to counter the tight proportions. A walk-in shower with a continuous wet-room floor allows the striped pattern to run uninterrupted, giving the space a cleaner, more expansive feel.
As the layout transitions towards the laundry, the floor tiles shift from soft blue-green to warm terracotta, offering a subtle visual cue between the two functions while maintaining a sense of cohesion.
Simple materials, thoughtful detailing and a carefully resolved layout transform what was once an awkward corridor-like space into a bright, open and seamlessly connected suite.

We added nude pink zellige tiles, rattan wall lights, painted the bespoke vanity in our paint colour Nettle Tea and added a bespoke mirror to the family bathroom in our Wandsworth Family Home project. Interior Design by Imperfect Interiors, photo Chris Snook
