Downstairs Bathroom: Expressive and Impactful Designed to bring energy and personality, this bold bathroom features: • Statement Leafy Greens wallpaper by The Beige Pandemic • Moss Green and Icone Noir tiles for texture and contrast • Black-framed shower, recessed shelving, and Plumbline Prava Spio vanity in Methven Oak • Finishing touches include brushed nickel fixtures, a backlit mirror, and motion-sensor LED strip for night-time ease From tired to tailored, this space now balances drama with day-to-day functionality. A key challenge was achieving visual wow without compromising functionality. We addressed this through careful spatial planning and thoughtful detailing—recessed shelving in the shower, warm timber cabinetry to add texture and storage, and brushed fixtures that offer contrast without overwhelming the room. The black-framed shower enclosure, set against black tiles and positioned opposite the statement wallpaper, provides a strong graphic counterbalance that ties the palette together beautifully. Lighting played a vital role in the transformation. A halo-lit mirror softens the space while delivering clear task lighting. An LED strip beneath the vanity, on a motion sensor and timer, ensures effortless nighttime use—enhancing both the practicality and mood of the space.

Nestled within Sydney’s historic Millers Point, this 1860s Victorian terrace has been reimagined as a serene family sanctuary—where patina-rich surfaces meet contemporary elegance. The curated interiors tell a story of history-infused maximalism, where every layer reveals a detail in service of heritage, emotion, and craft. Lorena Gaxiola’s poetic vision was to celebrate the family’s tri-cultural identity through salvaged timbers, artisanal finishes, and restrained yet expressive craftsmanship. From reinstated cornices to hand-finished brass accents and kauri floorboards, each intervention evokes a dialogue between past and present. Realising that vision required deft navigation of significant constraints: extensive structural damage from decades of water ingress and termites, heritage restrictions that demanded visual continuity, and tight access that challenged the logistics of modern construction. As designers, we oversaw every detail—from heritage review and documentation to construction coordination and bespoke installations. Threading new electrical, climate, and plumbing systems through fragile timber bones took surgical precision. Yet the results were seamless: original chandeliers revived, floorboards restored or matched with reclaimed timber, and American oak joinery paired with brass trims and marble mosaics brought new life to tired volumes. Design decisions were driven by sustainability, narrative, and craftsmanship. Custom pieces were commissioned from masters in their field—such as Lowe Furniture’s bespoke creations and a custom mural by Indigenous artist Danie Mellor, which pays homage to the family’s cultural roots. Each space was approached with emotion and intentionality, particularly the bathrooms which the client described simply and joyfully as: “The bathrooms make me happy.” Every room in the home unfolds like a story—patterned tiles, textured stone, and layered materials come together to offer intimate moments of discovery. Our commitment extended from spatial planning to final flourishes. We handled styling, soft furnishing installation, custom window treatments, and every curated object. Furniture was sourced locally, materials were salvaged when possible, and thoughtful detailing elevated every corner. The result is a timeless, emotionally resonant home—one that celebrates craftsmanship, elevates functionality, and preserves a precious piece of Sydney’s architectural legacy for generations to come.

Wall Tiles The walls are adorned with Tessino matt black tiles. These tiles create a bold, sophisticated backdrop, lending the bathroom a modern and sleek aesthetic. The matte finish softens the intensity of the black, giving the space a refined, high-end feel. Floor Tiles The same Tessino matt black tiles are used on the floor. Their consistent use across both the walls and the floor enhances the minimalist, cohesive design of the bathroom. Decor Tiles To break up the expanse of black, Lane Roble Noble decor tiles are introduced. These tiles feature warm wood-like tones, adding natural texture and contrast to the monochromatic design of the Tessino black tiles. Shower Area The shower is enclosed by a Flair Ayo 1200 mm fluted glass door with a brushed brass frame. The fluted glass introduces a delicate texture, while the brass finish provides a luxurious contrast to the dark tiles. A Gemstone onyx black shower tray, measuring 1700 x 900 mm, is paired with a convenient built-in shower seat. The deep black of the tray integrates seamlessly with the bathroom’s dark, dramatic theme. The Aqualla Kyloe Glide shower valve, in brushed brass, provides a sleek and modern control system, complementing the brass accents seen throughout the bathroom. Basin & Vanity The vanity is a large, striking unit, spanning 1400 mm and featuring four spacious drawers. The vanity is finished in black spray paint, with brushed brass bar handles adding a touch of elegance. This modern vanity provides ample storage and is perfectly aligned with the overall dark, stylish aesthetic of the room. A worktop with two undermount bowls is fabricated into the design, ensuring a clean and seamless look. Two Aqualla Kyloe wall-mounted mixers in brushed brass add sophistication and style to the basin area, maintaining continuity with the brass fixtures throughout the bathroom. Above the vanity is a large, 1400 x 700 mm glazed mirror that reflects light and enhances the sense of space. W.C. Area The WC is supported by a Tece 920 mm wall-hung frame, featuring a brushed brass flush plate that adds elegance to the installation. The Vitra V-Care Comfort provides state-of-the-art functionality with its advanced features, offering both comfort and convenience. Heating A brushed brass Aqualla Luca radiator, measuring 1800 x 600 mm, adds a luxurious and functional design element to the bathroom. The radiator also includes brass radiator valves to ensure all the brass accents remain consistent throughout the room. Lighting Two LED-lit alcoves add soft lighting and create a sense of depth within the space. Each alcove is highlighted by dedicated lighting, casting an elegant glow. Although no new ceiling lights are added, the existing lighting will be reused to maintain the room's ambience. Ambient light strips are strategically placed at the shower seat, along the basin, and under the vanity, subtly illuminating key areas and enhancing the room’s overall atmosphere. Accessories High-end, brushed brass accessories complete the space, carefully selected to match the other fixtures. The bathroom is designed with understated elegance and attention to detail.
