What to do with the oak trim around fireplace

We have just moved into our new home. Everything in the house is trimmed out in oak. I don't love the trim around the fireplace and the bookcases don't allow for a TV higher up. Any suggestions on how to update the look and so I put the TV above the fireplace?

Comments (2)Here are a few examples of modern sidewalks. I think that I would replace, stain or cover the entry sidewalk with large rectangles of concrete or stone. I would also replace the door with a more modern door. Perhaps you could just paint the door that you have but definately remove the storm door or replace it. Paint the trim & facia a charcoal color would be nice. I think in the entryway I would cover the brick with a horizontal wood plank stained in a rich color and replace the light fixture. Comments (11)I have to say that well made Roman Shades are not cheap, they are the higher end of the market. Secondly the thing to consider is that they are an all or nothing product, they are either open or closed. What part of the country do you live in? What direction do the windows face, and how often are those doors used? Drapery that can not be moved completely out of the way will get caught in the doors all the time, so while I hate taking out a window for any reason, removing it might make sense as it seems rather redundant. Don't do any type of venetian if this door is used a lot, and if you do, make sure you do an outside mount, allowing for the stack to go above the frame of the doors when they are open. I suggest that you look into Hunter Douglas Polysatin Shutters, they are great on french doors, and the Hunter Douglas Duette Architella Vertiglide is perfect on doors, they also come as a duo light, meaning you can put two blinds into one product - so a sheer and an opaque or semi-opaque product. Comments (7)You should replace them with vertical pickets or glass, and as soon as possible. What you have now is completely unsafe for children. If any opening is bigger than 4" it's dangerous when they're crawling. Their body can fit through, but not their head, they can hang themselves. Plus the horizontal rails are far too easy to climb once they're walking, nothing you add to what's there can fix that. 9 years agoThis is how my husband finished our fireplace. The viewing angle is fine for us. Another bonus is that the tv doesn't get blocked when people walk in front of it at a key point in the game!
