POLL: Pillows - one, two or more?

For decorative purposes, a bed piled high with pillows can be great, but when it comes to a restful night's sleep, how many pillows do you find to be the perfect amount?

For some, the difference between one or two pillows is minimal, and has little effect on how well they rest, but for others, it can seriously compromise the quality of those all important 7 or so hours!

Just the one and it has to be feather, else very flat. I've been known to sleep without a pillow at all if staying where the pillows are too thick.

One and it must be a really good quality Dunlopillow so it never loses volume under my head.

I would reupholster the rosewood furniture in natural canvas or a natural linen look . Ask the upholsterer to do the job with NO welting. That will make it look more contemporary. Then stop by West Elm, Pottery Barn, or Crate & Barrel for some brightly colored pillows. I'm thinking coral might work well with your tile, but you be the judge of what color works best with it. For now we'll assume it's coral. So I'd like to see one wall painted coral if you're so inclined. Otherwise, I'd leave the walls white. Next, let's cover some of that tile you don't like. Two choice: 1. A rug you'll take with you. Perhaps a shaggy offwhite one. 2. A rug you'll leave in your rental. This could be a large piece of carpeting, cut and bound like a rug. Measure for size before going to the carpet store. Most carpeting is 12' wide, so figure on making a rug 12 x something so that there is no waste, or you could make a couple of 6 x somethings. If you could change out the rosewood coffee table for another, I think you'd be happier with the furniture. It needs some variety. Even a couple of small tables from IKEA could work for 6 to 8 months.

The key thing to think about is making sure the 2 sofas are different enough that it doesn't look like you tried to match them and failed. You want to make sure the shape of the arms is in the same style - rounded or square? do they go to the front edge of the seats or not? Also is the back a tight back or loose cushions? Make sure the new sofa has the same visual weight as the old one. If it's a heavy looking sofa, get another heavy looking sofa. Since the leather one is black, I'd go with a grey colour. It will look good with what you have and be easy to clean. Make sure the fabric is 100% polyester. That is more durable than fabrics with cotton in them.

I think the color of the wall is quite nice. Speaking about accent on the wall I could recommend a large print on aluminum which does not require framing. You already have your accent colour as your sofa pillows (log roll pillows). I would take one of them shopping with me to get a rug that has that colour in it. It doesn't need to be a lot of that colour (I love the idea of burgandy rug here...but it might be too much with your monotone scheme). You can find a large rug that incorporates that red/raspberry in it so that you have a colour that is now your accent.

When we're making the bed the more pillows the better, but for sleeping it has to be one. Although everybody is different... very interested to see what others say.

As a teenager and for many years after that, I used to sleep without a pillow and I slept mostly (but not exclusively) on my stomach. Now I need support under my head, no matter whether I'm on my side or back - though I no longer sleep on my stomach - and I suspect it's because ... I'm fatter. I'm not suggesting that others responding who sleep with one or more pillows are fat but that's what I suspect is why I now need a pillow.
