House at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple in their late twenties and a pet poodle. She works is in the airline industry and he is a businessman.
Location: Ang Mo Kio
Type of property: 4-room flat
Size: 1,055 square feet (98 square metres)
Having the good fortune of finding a 4-room corner unit in the older estate of Ang Mo Kio, the new owners turned to design studio Three-d Conceptwerke to transform the resale flat into a home that reflects their interests. Designer and clients both shared the intention of using the flat’s old character and long layout for a win.
The design team set the tone from the entrance with a classic black-and-white palette carries through the rest of the flat. The old-school scissor gate and black-and-white mosaic tiles are the first indication.

Inside, a panoramic view of the flat shows an airy, open-concept layout with the dining area as the first focal point. The walls enclosing the first room were taken down and the space was reallocated to the living area. Placing the living space in a corner gives it a more intimate feel while allowing it to be part of the open-concept social space.
“While the beam could not be demolished, it provided us with the opportunity to paint and create an overarching frame to segment the living room. This creates the illusion of a private and cosy space,” say the design team.

Said frame culminates in floor-to-ceiling shelves and cabinetry that showcase the owners’ personal curios – and conceal clutter. Set against a dramatic black background are miniature airplanes and a globe to the wife’s career, books, photographs other knick-knacks.
A 2.4-metre-long walnut wood table, used not only for dining but also working, leads but is not connected to the kitchen island extension, which serves as an informal dining surface and transition from dining area to kitchen. The visual and physical demarcation for the two spaces is the change in flooring: from wood-look tiles to Peranakan-inspired tiles.

Track lights with black trunking emphasise the linear layout and run from the living-dining area through to the kitchen and towards the common bathroom and service yard. These lines together with the black kitchen rods for utensils are “like lines in a musical score”. This is also referenced by musical posters displayed throughout the flat. The designers’ intention was for these lines to connect the spaces to each other.
The service yard is an extension of the kitchen’s Peranakan-inspired floor tiles and black cabinetry.
A dose of colour was added to the master bedroom to add depth to the black-and-white palette. The rich, deep green was intended “to envelop the room with elegance, yet keep it snug and warm,” according to the design team.
