Preview: Archifest Opens up These Classic Singapore Design Books
Get to know our built heritage better with this curated collection of architectural publications
New at Archifest this year is Architecture in Print, an exhibit cum pop-up library presenting a diverse collection of print media, showcasing Singapore architects and their built projects, speculative works and design processes. An initiative by the Singapore Institute of Architects, this collection will be exhibited at the National Library building, where the public can view and browse the copies, gaining a better understanding into the work of an architect and how it has influenced and shaped the built environment for Singaporeans.

Architecture and the Architect:
Image-making in Singapore
Published by Do Not Design
Printed in Singapore
An intimate project, this publication arose out of an anxiety towards the fast-changing built landscape of Singapore. Its objective is to look at place, memory and nostalgia through the architectural landscape. At the same time, it attempts to understand the images of Singapore in the collective mind. How do we, as agents and recipients of the built environment, come together to decide the landscape that generations after our own should inherit?

An intimate project, this publication arose out of an anxiety towards the fast-changing built landscape of Singapore. Its objective is to look at place, memory and nostalgia through the architectural landscape. At the same time, it attempts to understand the images of Singapore in the collective mind. How do we, as agents and recipients of the built environment, come together to decide the landscape that generations after our own should inherit?
We have gone about the assembling individual memories of architects and users who are both, in their own ways, image-makers of the city. The result is a collage of both the physical and the sensory coming together to inform something about a spirit of intersecting times.
In its most celebratory tone, the images and anecdotes in this book recognise what we have. Yet, this is not meant as an evasion of criticality. Instead, we encourage readers to take an unprejudiced look at this city we call Singapore, before searching for their own meaning of place. We see this publication as a tribute as well as a reminder of the choices we have to make to strengthen a national identity.
Architecture in Print culminates with a conversation that’s open to the public on Sunday, October 15. A panel of architects, editors and published authors will discuss the relevance of architectural writing to the city – in terms of how it shapes the frontiers of public thought, how we see the city, and how we live.
