Room Tour: A Nursery That's Ready to Grow Up
The soft colour palette in this toddler's room is versatile enough to see her through many milestones
Armed with furniture that they already owned, the family of four who live in this 4-bedroom condo only needed interior decorating firm Arete Culture to plan and decorate rooms that would be versatile enough for the growing children. “They didn’t give a certain look or vibe they were after, but we wanted to design a space that would be practical for the children to use and grow into,” says Juline Moroney, who led this project.
The decorator says that she didn’t want “anything too kiddy”; rather a look that’s both age-appropriate yet has longevity as the children mature. “The way we did this was to stick very closely to a colour scheme (no garish colours),” she says – in this case, soft whites and the palest pink.

Moroney upcycled and painted the bookshelf and a standing mirror in Nouvelle Pink from Dulux. “That bookshelf actually came with doors, which we removed to open up the room a little more”, she says. The shelves now work as cubbies that make organising the little girl’s things easier.
With the new ‘blank’ slate, Moroney reorganised the layout of the room according to how Mylane would use it most at her age. The table and chair set, for example, were previously in a corner of the room but Moroney wanted to create a cosy playing area for the siblings so she moved them to a more central location. Ambient lighting and soft furnishings like the easy-to-clean rug, table accessories, and artwork were added to pull the room together.

Moroney brought in an armchair for the corner, creating a cosy nook for story time between mum and Mylane. “Tomomi (the mum) really liked how the chair looked in the room and decided to keep the piece”, Moroney says.
Mylane’s older brother, Lewis, has a similarly designed room using existing furniture that Moroney used for the room’s palette inspiration.
“We wallpapered his room, too, in a bright green/blue striped pattern that’s youthful but not kiddy. The wall paint is Ruffled Feathers from Dulux. The main thing we had to do with Lewis’s room was to cosy up the space so we introduced texture through an area rug and a pouf. We also completed the space with artwork that carries through the home’s colour scheme, just to make the rooms feel more cohesive,” Moroney says.

Who lives here: Mylane, who’s almost two (with her French dad, French-Japanese mum, and 4-year-old brother Lewis)
Location: Robertson Quay
Designer: Juline Moroney of Arete Culture
The homeowners didn’t want to invest in any more furniture as they already had perfectly functional pieces so Moroney gave certain pieces a coat of paint to freshen up the overall look. Matching a delicately dotted wallpaper from Arete Culture, she painted the room in Llama White and Spanish White from Dulux.
