3. Provide private spaces aside from the bedroom
Home: L-shaped bungalow in Bukit Timah
Who lives here: A couple, their two sons, and the boys’ grandfather
Designer: RT+Q Architects
Multi-generational feature:
The grandfather’s ‘granny flat’ has its own private timber deck (left) so he can have alfresco breakfast on his own, surrounded by lush greenery. The couple have their own private escape too, in the attic level – a master study with a greenhouse-style lounge (below).

4. Create common spaces as versatile as possible
Home: Intermediate terrace house in Siglap
Who lives here: A couple, their son, and the boy’s two grandmothers
Designer: Formwerkz Architects for the architecture and Studio IF for the interiors
Multi-generational feature: In the open-plan living, dining and kitchen level of this four-level home, the spaces flow easily into each other – but are provided the option of separation too. There are concealed pocket doors that can enclose the kitchen, so cooking smells do not have to permeate the living and dining spaces.
