Houzz Tour: Edgy, Industrial-Style BTO Flat is Full of Character
The owners of this five-room flat had two words for the project brief of their home: ‘unusual’ and 'industrial'
The living and dining areas enjoy an open-plan layout, while the kitchen is partially bordered by a half-wall.
Most of the furniture is purpose-built to fit the ‘unusual, industrial‘ brief: the shoe rack, for example, is made of plastic PVC pipes tied together, the sofa and ottoman are foam slabs set on packing pallets, and the dining table was designed to resemble the “in case of emergency break glass” casing. The owners and the designer collaborated on these pieces of furniture.
Pop culture dominates the decor: one living area wall bears graffiti inspired by the Joker and Harley Quinn, with the owners’ names “Shan and Mahes”. There are also references to Resident Evil‘s Umbrella Corporation and The Hunger Games.

Embedded and embossed rebars radiate from beneath the dining table, like rays of sun, towards different parts of the house.
The owners wanted an indoor herb garden by the kitchen. The coloured light is meant to make the herbs grow better, and adds to the radioactive ambience.

In the kitchen, stainless steel worktops complement the industrial-style appliances.
Pops of colour appear through the water and electrical piping.
One bedroom was converted into a study room. The bespoke bookshelf was designed in the form of the icon of The Sith Order from Star Wars. Opposite the bookcase, the wall is painted with a graffiti of the Marvel comic villain Carnage.
The other bedroom was converted into a workshop, where the owners do their crafting and metalworks. The equipment cabinet was inspired by the fire hose box of the HDB block.
In the master bedroom, a concrete-finished platform with built-in storage was designed for the bed. The open (or exposed) wardrobe is made of metal pipe fittings. Neon lighting under the platform gives it a floating look.
The bathrooms, not photographed, have gas masks as the wall light fixtures.

Type of Property: 5-room HDB Flat
Size: 1,060 square feet, 3 bedrooms
Project duration: 10 weeks
