One Chair, 10 Homes: The Statement-Making Egg Chair
See the manifold looks this iconic curvy chair takes on in different spaces around the world
One of the most recognisable pieces of Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, the Egg chair was originally designed in 1958 as part of a commission for the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel (formerly SAS Royal Hotel) in Copenhagen, the first skyscraper in Denmark. The Egg chair is a testament to Jacobsen’s design triumphs – its curves provided a striking contrast to the building’s sharp, linear surfaces. He was also the first to use and perfect a sculpting technique wherein the chair was moulded out of a strong foam inner shell under the upholstery. Since then, the design has remained the same, with satin polished steel pedestal and aluminium star-shaped base, and has come out in many gorgeous colours.
The Egg’s unique fluid shape creates a cocooning effect that exudes both comfort and sophistication. It fits seamlessly in any interior style, which is why it continues to be a popular piece in today’s homes. Here we show you how this modern masterpiece takes the stage in different interiors.
