Watch Your Chair's Back
Let your living or dining room make a glamorous style impression using an unexpected part of your furniture
As an interior designer, I know that very often details on the rear of our furniture designs can have an equally dramatic effect.
Fashion designers have long understood the value of dramatic detailing on the back of a dress. There is something intrinsically sexy in the contrast between an elegant, even demure gown with a deeply revealing plunge backline, as in so many celebrities walking the red carpet at Hollywood events!
Just as my personal trainer will not let me escape our sessions without a punishing regime of squats and lunges, I consider attention to the derriere a crucial element in interior and furniture design.
Oftentimes, the rear of your furniture is the first thing that greets you when you enter a room. So neglect your backs no more! Here are a few ideas to jazz them up.
Graphic details
Many of our clients consider the dining table to be a major investment piece, but, quite frankly, it is usually hidden behind a ring of chairs. Instead, it is the rear of these chairs that become the dominant feature.

Pick a pattern
Luckily, adding detail or embellishment to the back of a chair is far less expensive and can have a greater impact on the room than splashing out on a designer table!

Subtly nuanced
Consider your furniture layout. It is very often the rear of your furniture that is the first thing you see when you enter a room. This subtle piped detail is understated but gives the clear impression of a carefully considered room.

Add a statement piece
The placement of an interesting console behind a sofa can help separate an open plan space into defined zones and provide a far more appealing first impression of a room.
