We love the night and day transformation this garden took on when our client requested a zen garden for her backyard in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. It’s always fun to be asked to design a garden with so many charming creative elements. Our re-design included brown bamboo fencing to cover a very bright white vinyl fence, a fountain, loose grey stones, dark brown deck tiles, contemporary furnishings, a stone Japanese lantern statue, and white fiberglass planters. The plantings include cherry laurels, bamboo, a red weeping maple, moss, grasses, and variegated euonymus. Overhead globe lights add a cheerful nighttime touch. A new deck with Japanese-style railing was added to a pre-existing deck. The railing was handcrafted by Hiroshi Sakaguchi using traditional Japanese hand tools. To the left is the back side of a partial wall with a bamboo latticed window (shitaji mado).

The canopy and decking provide an extension of the interior room for outdoor dining nestled amongst the developing screen planting which will provide privacy and the green walls to the outdoor room. The Cherry tree will eventually fill out the gap in the pergola providing a lush canopy. A touch of informal fairy lights will add a dash of sparkle to those outdoor evenings. The planning took advantage of the abundance of lush greenery: in the private pool, one swims amongst tree tops, which provide a beautiful natural screening to supplement the ceramic fritted glass partition which prevents overlooking between floors.
