These clients are Disney FANATICS and desired a whimsical play space for their two young children. We wanted to give them all the whimsy they desired with a subtle Disney undertone. A hidden theme in each element to the design is derived from different Disney movies. For example, seven drawers under the window seat for the “Seven Dwarfs”, scalloped removable wallpaper behind the TV to represent “The Little Mermaid” fish scales, whimsical umbrellas on the custom storage unit are straight replicas of the “Mary Poppins” prop, a bold hair on hide to call to “The Lion King”, a small sofa that converts to a twin bed perfect for “Sleeping Beauty”. The hidden messages throughout the space lead to a unique design and story that the clients were enthralled to play along with!

Designed by Interior Designer, A. Lantz Design, this Lake Charlevoix project was featured on the cover of Traditional Home magazine! Located in the lower level of the home, just steps away from the family room and rec room is this darling children's play area. The space is located in a bump out and underneatht he stairs. We looked at the space and knew exactly what we wanted to do! We partnered with a local artist to create a rustic, whimsical, camping mural in the space. We filled the space with camp-themed toys like a tent, firepit, grill & faux food, book shelf, and canoe. Adults can be enjoying the big game in the family room while children are in sight and "roasting s'mores" by the "fire".

More than ever, kids have become the centre of the family’s attention. That's why kids rooms have become an important part of a new home, or a family’s home renovation. Whether it’s making a decision on the children’s bed, clothes storage, wall decor, or even a study corner, you’ll realise that the kids bedroom or playroom should serve many functions beyond just a place for the little boy or girl to sleep in. How should I decorate a kids room?

Children should have a say in what bedroom furniture they would like, and even the design and decor of their bedroom. Beyond searching for boys or girls room ideas, try finding kids room photos with items that encourage play, such as a puppet theatre tent, craft station or teepee. If you want to splurge, look for photos of rooms with unique features like a climbing wall, slide or swing. Some rooms let kids create their own masterpiece with wall decals or a chalkboard wall, and include floor cushions and beanbags for lazing about. Others have dedicated toy storage spaces, which become part of the room's decor, and will encourage kids to maintain a sense of order where each item of play has it's own dedicated location. Having a dedicated playroom for toys encourages children to return their toys within this space, as opposed to being left in the kitchen, living or dining room.

Focus on Reading and Learning

Does your child enjoy discovering the world through the written word? If you'd like to encourage this interest in your little girl or boy, look for book and reading-focused children's rooms where books are attractively laid out throughout the bedroom. Or find examples of children's rooms with a reading corner. These spaces have bookcases as the centrepiece furniture of the room, or where bookcases temptingly close to the bed, easy within reach.
