Designers Vandra Png and Wilson Teng of Studio FortyFour responded to the owners’ vision of having a ‘wooden home’, warmed by the look and texture of the natural material, by using wood-effect tiles and laminates on customised features and furniture.

House at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple & their two-year-old son
Location: Jurong West
Type of property: Four-room HDB BTO (Build-to-Order) flat
Size: 90 square metres (about 990 square feet); three bedrooms
Project duration: 3 months

Designers Vandra Png and Wilson Teng deftly answered the owners’ request for a ‘wooden home’ with an open kitchen and low seating by first tweaking the configuration of the four-room flat. The kitchen was merged with the service yard and opened up to an elevated ‘broken-plan‘ living-dining area.

Using the owners’ quirky preference for sitting on the floor, the designers customised the pair of stackable sofas and dining/coffee table. “When they want a higher seat height or to free up the living space for their son to play, they can stack up the sofas,” says Png.

“As mentioned the owners like sitting on the floor, which applies to how they like to dine too. So we created a low dining table that [also] acts as a coffee table for them.”

This living/dining area was built on a platform. By elevating this space, the floor-to-ceiling height is lowered, creating a cosier nook that the owners can laze, dine and play with their son in, say the designers.

With their toddler (and other future offspring) in mind, the owners wanted an open kitchen so the mum can easily see him while she’s working on their meals.

A pale pastel green laminate on the custom-made cabinets (with their charming leather pulls) complements the easy-to-clean wood-effect floor tiles and countertop.

The master bedroom is simply furnished with the mattresses on the floor, and a customised ‘hanging’ headboard (not seen).

“We added the sliding door to separate the wardrobe area from the sleeping area as the husband works shift hours, so it minimises the disturbance when he goes to / comes back from work,” says Png.
