The Wave House

Situated on a challenging sloped lot, an elegant and modern home was achieved with a focus on warm walnut, stainless steel, glass and concrete. Each floor, named Sand, Sea, Surf and Sky, is connected by a floating walnut staircase and an elevator concealed by walnut paneling in the entrance. The home captures the expansive and serene views of the ocean, with spaces outdoors that incorporate water and fire elements. Ease of maintenance and efficiency was paramount in finishes and systems within the home. Accents of Swarovski crystals illuminate the corridor leading to the master suite and add sparkle to the lighting throughout. A sleek and functional kitchen was achieved featuring black walnut and charcoal gloss millwork, also incorporating a concealed pantry and quartz surfaces. An impressive wine cooler displays bottles horizontally over steel and walnut, spanning from floor to ceiling. Features were integrated that capture the fluid motion of a wave and can be seen in the flexible slate on the contoured fireplace, Modular Arts wall panels, and stainless steel accents. The foyer and outer decks also display this sense of movement. At only 22 feet in width, and 4300 square feet of dramatic finishes, a four car garage that includes additional space for the client's motorcycle, the Wave House was a productive and rewarding collaboration between the client and KBC Developments. Arriving guests pass through a small garden before the front door opens to reveal the dramatic view. The main living area connects onto the covered porch and through to the kitchen and small den. A varied ceiling form and staggered exterior wall helps the large, informal space feel comfortable for two people or a large gathering. The textures of painted brick and rustic wall planks offset the warm tones of the vintage timbers and wood flooring.

This highly customized kitchen was designed in such a way to make use of as much space as possible in an elegant and modern way. The combination of walnut veneer cabinets and buttermilk caesarstone countertops creates contrast in a subtle and eye catching way. The angled island adds dimension and intrigue to the design, as well as creates a solution for seating at the island.

This remodel of a mid century modern home was focused on improving the flow and functionality of the kitchen while respecting the existing design style. We removed the wall separating the living area from the kitchen and installed recycled chalkboard countertops on some great new cabinets by Kerf design. New aluminum windows added much needed cross ventilation while complementing the existing architecture. New appliances, lighting and flooring rounded out the remodel. Photos by Kerf

An extensive Remodel of of an existing 1,500 square foot Flat, resulting in an open expansive Kitchen, Dining and Entry. Three large skylights and expansive windows were introduced into the main open space, creating a significantly brightened interior. Clean, Modern Design is emphasized. The main space now spans the length of the building, over 60 feet. The New Open Kitchen, Dining and Entry was created from an existing dark and underutilized Hallway. The new space includes a reconfigured Living Room, Bedroom, Master Bedroom and Bath, 2 Bedrooms, and the open main Kitchen, Dining and Entry. The Bright, Clean, Modern Design also creates a galleried space for Modern Art and Furnishings.

The owner's buoyant personality, own design work, and extensive art collection inspire the renovation and addition to this Potrero Hill home. Of course, the dramatic views of the city from the site, which is open on three sides, contribute their fare share to the project's success as well. Here, we worked specifically to "curate" the natural light — using it to draw people up and through the space, to focus attention on the collection of art objects, and to propel them back out to panoramic views of the city beyond. As in all of our work, we were strategic in the use of resources, maintaining the original character of the front of the home, while subtly coaxing more character out of materials, such as simple exterior siding, at the rear Photography: Matthew Millman
