Houzz Tour: A Shelf That Maximises Space in a Compact One-Bedder
This modern contemporary one-bedder was redesigned with an all-in-one shelf to improve the functionality of the home
Named “House For A Living Shelf”, this one-bedroom apartment was designed by Liew Kok Fong of Studio Super Safari. Liew shares that the homeowners wanted to improve the spatial quality of the space to make it look and feel bigger.
“The homeowners wanted a modern and contemporary theme and chose a dark grey colour scheme with touches of light wood,” explains Liew.
To bring contrast to the dark colours from the shelving system, a light shade of grey was chosen for the flooring. Also, the subtle patterns from the carpentry added just the right amount of texture to the space.

A compact kitchen meant that countertop space was very limited. Liew suggested a double-duty dining table where the homeowners could also use the table for food preparation. As the table was custom made, it matched the height of the table of the study nook, giving the homeowners more room to work, too.
Wanting a sense of connection to the living area, Liew chose to swap out the bedroom door for glass sliding ones. The additional ‘window’ by the side helps to let in more natural light into the room as well.
Keeping with the modern and contemporary theme, the furniture in the bedroom is clean-lined and unassuming. The warm shade of brown from the wardrobe, together with the upholstered headboard add a sense of cosiness to the bedroom.
“The headboard is designed as a feature wall for the room, keeping in mind that the homeowners may choose to upsize their bed from a queen to a king,” says Liew.
Elegant and sophisticated, the brown tones in this bathroom bring a sense of tranquility, providing a sanctuary for the homeowners to retreat to at the end of a long day at work.

The challenge was to make the apartment look and feel spacious without compromising on functionality.
Liew’s idea was to build a shelving system that spans the entire length of the apartment, which encompasses the kitchen, dining, study, and living room. A built-in and customised solution ensured that not an inch of space was wasted.
