Houzz Tour: A Sprawling Penthouse With A Country Cottage Feel
This couple's spin on shabby chic reflects their fun-loving personality and love for tranquil colours
Inspired by Airbnb apartments they’ve stayed in during holidays in Australia, the homeowners wanted their new home to reflect and feature some of their favourite decor ideas. They turned to interior designer Kate Deng of Mr Shopper Studio who transformed their condo penthouse into a warm and cosy sanctuary that’s evocative of a cottage but with a modern twist.
The homeowners did not shy away from colour and were onboard for a patterned rug and a customised dusty-pink sofa and ottoman, which help anchor the living room.

The quirky mix of textures and fabrics in the living room show off the homeowners’ eclectic style.
Right behind the sofa is a bistro-style dining set. Tucked into a corner by the balcony, this casual eating spot is flooded with natural light.
Taking advantage of the high ceiling, Deng converted the loft into a study. The full-length glass panels help visually enlarge the room, and lets the homeowners admire the brick wall in their living room, too!

“The homeowners did not like the angled ceiling that the developer provided and they wanted to level it. However, we proposed turning it into a unique feature of the bedroom instead,” explains Deng.
Non-structural wooden beams were added to the vaulted ceiling, affirming the cottage look that is typically heavy on wood and stone.
Rather than actual stone and bricks, Deng used stucco for the wall behind the bed, a lightweight material that easily mimics the look and feel of painted or roughly-plastered bricks.

Deng ensured that the rest of furniture and accessories were carefully curated to reflect the shabby-chic look. This chest of drawers that the couple use as a bedside table was chosen for its distressed finish, tarnished hardware, and faded pastel hue.

“We created a cosy and warm home by exploring and putting together different materials such as panels that resemble raw bricks, textured wood finishing and fabrics,” shares Deng.
The centrepiece of the living room is the brick wall that accentuates the ceiling height.
“To achieve the look and texture of a real brick wall, we proposed a brick look-alike material from CraftStone. The one we picked has a raw texture, and orange and pink undertones, which add a sense of warmth,” says Deng.
