Houzz Tour: 'Sanctuary' is the Keyword for This Condo
This contemporary-classic condo exudes quiet elegance and a natural restfulness, making it a haven for its owners
A good portfolio not only opens doors to new opportunities, but can also inspire future projects. Architect Stephen Goh and design principal Angela Tantry of Metaphor Studio know this well – the owners of a 2,885 square-foot apartment in the River Valley area commissioned them to design and renovate their home, giving the design duo complete creative freedom based on their past works.
Even as the spaces are visually connected through their material finishes, the designers incorporated demarcating features. The kitchen floor, for example, is clad in flamed granite, while the rest of the public area is in beige marble. A large sliding panel was designed to be virtually invisible when open, separating the kitchen and dining space when pulled out, so as to minimise cooking odours.

A bedroom wall was hacked and replaced with a new wall that’s partially storage and ‘windows’ that connect it with the public areas of the house. All built-in storage solutions were finished with the same light elm veneer to achieve visual consistency. Blackened stainless steel frames add contrast and call focus to various spaces.
The neutral palette is paired with well-planned lighting to create a restful ambience throughout the home. Many transparent walls (glass panels in place of solid walls) allow natural light into even the innermost corners.
Metaphor Studio’s restrained use of natural elements such as the natural elm veneer, occasionally highlighted by a fossilised wood sculpture, creates that resort feel, while clean, contemporary elements such as the blackened stainless steel frames maintain the house’s urban edge.
This project was recently recognised with a silver award for Best Residential Design, Apartment ≥ 2001 sqft (Singapore) at the Interior Design Excellence Awards (I-DEA) 2017.

Who lives here: A couple in their forties, both working as finance consultants, and their 15-year-old daughter
Location: River Valley
Size: 2,885 square feet (268 square metres; 4 bedrooms)
Known for their flair with the urban resort style, Goh and Tantry were asked by the owners to apply their magic touch to their apartment. The owners also wanted visual connectivity throughout the different rooms of their home.
To fulfil the brief, Metaphor Studio proposed “a consistent material application throughout the entire interior space to achieve a continuation and connection between the public (areas) and private sanctuary”. They used natural light elm veneer for cabinetry and built-ins (such as the dining table) to tie the different spaces – which otherwise feature different flooring finishes – together.
