Room Tour: A Playful Woodland Bedroom for a Pair of Girls
Whimsical touches make this sunny bedroom magical and inspiring for two sisters
The owners of this four-bedroom condominium unit knew exactly what they wanted for their home: colour, pattern and personality. What they needed help with was how to combine all these into a cohesive whole, without looking too busy. “The client wanted to create a different look and feel in each room but at the same time, for the whole apartment to flow well,” says designer Elizabeth Acland of boutique interior design firm E & A Interiors. Since “apartments can be a bit soulless with white boxes for rooms”, the owners wanted to give each room a distinct character, the perfect example of which is their children’s bedroom.
What’s a forest without the sun? Custom-made yellow curtains add a cheerful touch of sunshine and the plain fabric allows the window treatment to be used for years to come. To complement the bright colours and neutral tones, the designer also picked the bedsheets, toy baskets, chairs and textured rug.
The final, crowning touch to the room is a charming pendant lamp shaped like a wire cage and dotted with vibrantly-coloured birds.

In their idea board for the children’s bedroom, the designers combined monochromatic elements with pops of colour. Texture was also key, from the actual (woven baskets, little poufs) to the two-dimensional (wallpaper).
Acland chose this aviary-inspired lamp from the UK, because it adds to the “woodland and wildlife feel.” The copper cage is festooned with delightful birds made with real feathers. Acland feels that for small rooms in particular, “lighting is key, so for each bedroom we sourced really amazing pendant lights to add character and to act as a design feature.”

A woodland theme was chosen for the two little girls’ room. “The starting point was the treehouse bed,” says Acland, “then [we] built the room around that.” She then looked for the perfect wallpaper to tie in with the theme and found it in the iconic design by Michael Clark for Cole and Son. Designed in 1959, this pattern of silver birches is striking and brings the magical forest indoors. “An easy way to give character to a small room is to use wallpaper,” Acland says. “We used wallpaper in nearly every room in the apartment.”
