Houzz Tour: Condo Blends Clean Scandi Lines With Rustic Charm
This young family needed a cosy home with a playful sense of style that can grow with their two sons
The owners of this new three-bedroom condo wanted their home to have “a modern Scandinavian feel”, says the design team from Mr Shopper Studio. They proposed “the usual colour palette of typical Scandinavian homes, adding champagne-gold elements that are light (hued) and match well with light wood too.”
The standard-issue glossy white tile flooring was overlaid with light wood-look vinyl flooring for that Scandinavian touch. The wall leading from the foyer and perpendicular to the kitchen was clad with mirror panels, visually enlarging the condo’s L-shaped open-concept kitchen. The mirrored wall culminates at the living area, becoming a feature wall comprising fluted fins of light wood laminate and a marble laminate-clad TV console. The designers added metallic accents in the form of the coffee table details and soft furnishings to complement the gold Be@brick.

As the owners wanted more indoor lounge space, they requested for the dining area to be placed in the balcony. The designers installed Ziptrak blinds to prevent rain and reduce sunlight from coming in to the alfresco dining space. “If they needed air conditioning, they could open the sliding door too.”

In addition to the modern Scandi-style feel, the owners also asked for a rustic touch, and the design team applied this to the master bedroom. They built a platform for the bed, adding some concealed storage in this area, and essentially lowering the ceiling height (by raising the surface that the bed is placed on) for a cosier feel. Screed-look laminate was used to clad the ceiling and walls for a rustic effect. Cove lighting enhances the cosy appeal. “It’s quite a contrast when you enter the room from the living area. It’s rustic and dark in comparison.”
The designers reconfigured the layout of the master bedroom, moving the existing wardrobe to make space for an accessories island.

As the sons are still little, the design team suggested that their rooms be decorated with loose furnishings “so that we can keep it updated accordingly, as they grow”.

The design team took their cue from the owners’ metallic Be@rbrick toys. “Initially, the Be@rbrick giant collection wasn’t intended to be placed there [flanking the artwork behind the sofa], but we felt it could be the right height of a table lamp which was meant for it instead.” The designers custom-designed the sideboard on which the Be@rbricks stand to match the geometric artworks. To do this, they used FENIX laminate “for its extremely opaque and low light reflectivity and anti-fingerprint features.”
